Unreal Tournament 2004
|
All of these models aside from the Nali Warcow can be downloaded from the following location. The Warcow has a few hang-ups that have benched him. +Mirror 1 at Levels4you +Mirror 2 at the Beyond Unreal Fileworks, set up by SaD +Mirror 3 at PCGameMods, courtesy Sinnthetika. +When I wasn't looking someone set up Mirror 4 at UTZone, a European site. It was funny to do searches for my own pack after it was released because I'd gets hits on news posting from several sites I'd never heard of, many in languages I don't know. Love the internet. +I've also temporarily uploaded individual models to my yahoo briefcase. +Atari forums thread for those intertested.
Pack released: April 8th, 2005

Elastigirl You've all seen The Incredibles, some of you a few times. I saw the movie on the 1st weekend of release and enjoyed it to the point of wanting to model a character. Ironically enough "Elastigirl" was the only main character that had a body shape that would fit a default model. Well, that and I thought she was kind of hot... ...er, well. Let's just hope disney/pixar aren't the kind to get all uppity about people making fan art of their work. She's clocking in at 3,712 triangles (I really wanted to see that smoothness).
Name: Elastigirl Age: Unknown. Race: Human Data: Normal is relative... ...but people with super powers are still better than you. |

Golem A rocky creature that I had plenty of reference material available for. It seems like every fantasy game from the oldest system to the newest has had elementals of some form. Ice, fire, and rock monsters provided easily designed enemies. Though of course the myths go back much further than games, a few reference pictures even came from old German film versions of the most famous Golem story, that of the Mud Golem of Prague. Ice and fire would've really been too complex for the engine, so rock was the obvious choice.
Really I was only having fun making a character out of primitives that I just pushed and pulled on. Even the material is just baked procedurals. The whole thing was done in nearly one night. Name: Golem Age: Semi-immortal Race: Magical creature Data: Raised from the earth itself by Judah Loew to defend the persecuted against injustice, the Golem now fights for himself with a hatred originating from not being able to understand the humanity that created him. He will not rest until he is either destroyed or marked upon by the negation of truth. |

Idolatry This character started out as a collection of random visual ideas I had. Once they were assembled I tried different texture materials and the golden one coupled with the animal symbols kind of made the name pretty obvious. I think the idea of a physical representation of a vice is somewhat creepy, and proper for the game. Name: Idolatry Age: Unknown Race: Robot Data: The one armed representation of a truly technological sin has descended upon the Tournament. He fights for the glory of himself, demanding blood sacrifices upon the earth itself which he considers to be his very own widespread altar. |

Jeroboam 3,004 triangles. Great godly Greek goat gets good gimp geek gearing to skin, yes?
Note: That "opyx" to the right is my bastardization of the Greek alphabet. Oryx is Latin for goat, but while the Greek has an equivalent of O and R [Omicron and Rho, which resembles a P] it apparently doesn't have a modern equivalent for Y or X so I just used the ones similar in appearance [upsilon and chi]. Name:
Jeroboam Age:
2000+ Race:
Satyr (sa`iyr) Data: Taking his name from the ancient Israeli king who tried to introduce the idolatry of "he-goats" to his people, Jeroboam lives on as the dark culmination of the rejection of gods found in the Liandri tournament. He is a ruthless warrior, familiar in the strategies perfected by his Grecian ancestors. The only thing worse than what he will do to the men of your fallen city is what he will do to the women. |

Kefka People are always asking for Final Fantasy models on game forums. That's understandable considering the high level of quality the art of the series has maintained. Unfortunately the prettier pictures and characters often come with the newer games, the 3d games (from 7 onward). None the less Final Fantasy 6 from 1994 was not only one of my favorite games as a young gamer, but had some of the best artwork ever seen for a 2d console system. There were times where you could tell the limits of the Super Nintendo's color palette was being pushed, where it seemed as if they had simply scanned oil paintings, now reduced to fit the low resolution output. At least it was that way for the monsters, the actual characters had remained in the series' tradition of small sprites, barely 16 pixels wide. With that limitation in place, the real appreciation of the characters came from one of the premiere concept artists of the industry, Yoshitaka Amano, whose drawings often riddled the instruction booklets. To this day I still have some pencil copies I made of those characters at only 12, honing my drawing by studying and imitating his works.
Name: Kefka Age: Unknown Race: Human? Data: The devious clown known as Kefka kept true to his 2nd in command nature by casting the former Emperor Gestahl from the floating continent. Henceforth he would send the world into ruin, ruling with an iron grip and destroying all in his path. |

Kei Kishimoto Kishimoto and Kurono are characters from the Japanese comic GANTZ, a science fiction spectacle of gore and skin which argues that for some artists, now growing past high school can be a good thing. With this model, I learned just how painful it can be to look at a model when the skeleton system doesnt' support facial expressions. Kei's using way more polys than a model this simple really should with 5, triangles.
I don't particularly like the way I did the head (there's some strange clipping around the thighs too). So I guess this model just goes to illustrate how hard it can be to get personality into a character whose body is moving, but whose face is not. Somehow the stillness of the drawn image helps itself I think. Name: Kei Kishimoto Age: Late teens Race: Human. Data: One sad girl called upon by GANTZ to fight the alien invasion. She is compassionate by nature and is a warrior willing to giver everything to protect her friends, or at the very least, half of everything. |

Lycaos Not much to say about this guy. It's a wolf. It's were... ...I don't know what were is but he's it... ...possibly in right field. He's not that scary with only 2,325 triangles. Name:
Lycaos Age:
Unknown Race:
Lycanthrope Data: In the time of the ancient Greeks, Lycaos was the one of the great kings of Arcadia. His cruelty knew no modesty and ruled without regret. In a fit of pride he tried to earn the favor of the almighty Zeus by sacrificing the flesh of a child, for such a presumption of power Zeus instead turned him into a wolf. |

Mecha Sapien Just a random Robot design. This is one of the first models I did actually, I was just messing around and kept adding points and polys until he was up to 5,040 triangles. Strange how more detailed models can take so many fewer polys than smooth ones because of their flatness. Name:
MechaSapien Age:
Unknown Race:
Robot Data: The 192nd season of the smash television show "Battlebots" has given birth to this custom built competition bot. |

MJ12 Commando A while ago I was involved in a project to retexture Deus Ex with higher resolution textures than the game came with. We also thought we'd redo some of the player characters with higher rez textures. Due to size limits on the UT engine we decided to just make new models so we could fit more 512x512 .pcx files on them. The project went downhill because of a lack of actual replacing code, enthusiasm and the kicker: someone else was already had a similar mod in the works (same guy doing the "2027" mod). He's looking funky at 2,958 triangles.. Name:
MJ12 Commando Age:
Unknown Race:
Cyborg Data: The Commando is the 2nd line of attack and defense for the secretive Majestic 12 after frontline soldiers, so they are obviously more powerful than a normal man in almost every capacity. For purposes of fairness within the tournament their internal guns have been removed |

Malevolence This model was made after I decided I just wanted to make something simple, something that wouldn't take forever to attach to the default bones, and what could cut development time down as well as simply not making an entire character? He's floating pretty heavy for someone with no body at 4,978 triangles.
Also, I don't know why his teeth are glowing... ...they just... ...are. Name:
Malevolence Age:
2 ½ Race:
Robot Data: Said to be powered by the ghost of a past fallen competitor, the Malevolence entity's lack of a body allows it to be driven by no earthly pleasure except that of competition |

Major Motoko Kusanagi I'll admit something right up front. The point of this model was to see if I could purposefully break the UT2004 engine. So yeah, she's strutting pretty at 9,979 triangles (She was built using quads and Nurbs so it wasn't that hard). It's fun to put about 30 of them in a match at the same time. I started on the model itself about the same time I began reading "Man Machine Interface" and Stand Alone Complex started airing on the Cartoon Network, she was modeled and texture mapped in less then a week. But before you fault any dissimilarities from the show, know I decided to go back further and base the model on a composite of several of Shirow's old original drawings of her from the Ghost in the Shell comic itself (mostly cover shots).
At this point, looking back at the model list, I guess there's a slight chance of a possibility of the odds that I just might very well have a thing for unrealistically proportioned women who kick ass. Oh well. Thermoptic Camo not included. Name: Major Motoko Kusanagi Age: Body: Early 20's, Brain: late 30's Race: Cyborg Data: Refitted with an entirely cybernetic body, agent Kusanagi was appointed to Public Security Police Section 9 after being approached by the Ministry of Home Affairs. Understandably, little information is publicly available because of the nature of her work, if not herself. Note: The Japanese characters used in her name are the same used to denote the sacred sword of the Emperors of Japan. |

Mugen One of the stars of Shinichiro Watanabe's "Samurai Champloo", I personally prefer to refer to Mugen as Spike 2.0. In the show he often uses an interesting break dancing style of sword fighting with steel lined Geta shoes, too bad I can't put that in the game. Name: Mugen Age: Unknown Race: Human Data: A wayward swordsman, Mugen has traveled the lands of Japan in search of fine women and fine food, though not always in that order. He hails from the hell island of Ryukuu, known far and wide as one of the rougher places to live during the Edo period. It was a breeding ground of thieves, murderers and criminals in general. |

Oni Yoroi This was the actual first model I made (for ut2004), based loosely on a failed UT99 model. That's probably the reason for it's relatively low 1,776 triangle count. Name: Oni Yoroi Age: Unknown Race: Human? Data: The Demon Armor remains beyond death. |

Spider Jerusalem Have you read "Transmetropolitan"? Yes? Good. No? Then I'm sorry to say that, chances are, Warren Ellis and Derick Robertson will not be treating you to an Ebola Cola on Drink my Urine day this year... Name: Spider Jerusalem Age: Unknown Race: New Scum Data: Journalist for the city paper "Transmetropolitan", Jerusalem enjoys immense popularity with his column "I hate it here". Having been called down from the mountain, literally, Spider runs amuck in the city, computer in one hand, bowel disruptor in the other. |

Sun City Guard This is an off hand design for a background character to a comic that I'll probably never even draw. Sounds real important doesn't he? I like the design none the less. Bonus points to those that can immediately read his halo. Name: Sun City Guard Age: Unknown Race: Human Data: The white mountain peaks of the center world region have given the towns that settled and forged into one there the title of "sun city". It's a name that has remained for thousands of years as the city has grown and receded several times. In the age of this guard the city is the financial trade capital of the world, and requires only the strongest to guard it's people from dangers both outside and within. |

Nali Warcow In the Atari forums a few people had been asking for this for a while, disappointed that the cow (first seen in a bonus pack for the original UT) had not been included in the latest incarnation of the series. I gave the model a shot without any real intention of finishing it, being as, I had never made a model before. I had tried for UT and failed miserably, so when I made even a bit of headway with this one I decided to [relatively] stick with it (a bit of headway being I got a non-moving mesh to surf on top of the Manta). He's only got 3,722 so when in motion his unique physiology gives away many of his polys. Frankly, at this point, I'd rather just remake him entirely then fix some of the inaccuracies I can now recognize. Name:
War Cow Age:
Unknown. Race:
Nali Data: It took years of experimental breeding and hormone modification but finally, after so long, the cow has returned. |

This shot represents about 8 hours of work, with 2,648 triangles to show for it. I could probably get it down further, but that's certainly not needed here. |
Skadi This model was born when I started to consider applying for modeling jobs that start up game studios were offering through UT fan sites. They made an effort to comb the community for workers so I figured I'd bite. Then when tripwire interactive, the makers of the WW2 mod Red Orchestra posted job openings, it occurred to me though that while I had plenty of models none of them were terribly realistic. Thus a modern day SWAT type character was born. Also, I figured I'd kill two birds with one stone and model a female character with some modesty for once.
The legs are a little long I think, but I blame the default UT2004 skeleton for that.
Release Date: Pending. |
(click) This is what I consider to be the final build mesh (colors are temporarily poly coded, not uv mapped). Though much of it should still be "pushed and pulled", I find it best not to do too much of that until I see it move in game a bit. |

This is a model that I did not make, but imported into the game for the modeler / texture maker, Silver Ibex.
Covert Operative Even before I shaved off some excess polys from the joints Silver_Ibex had made an extraordinarily low poly model with only a few hundred triangles. Grand texturing too.
Name: Classified Age: Classified Race: Human Data: By nature, you're not supposed to know anything about him until it's too late |

Addendum: (downloads disabled for space reasons)
In building these models I came to witness first hound how many peculiar occurrences pop up during game development. For instance, my first successful importation of a model ever was for the Warcow. I had apparently forgot to double check some alignment figures and he result was seeing the stout biped actually surfing on top of some of the vehicles...
You have no idea how happy this alone made me.
At another point in development, I was trying to fix his walk cycle and failed to update the animation file after updating the mesh file. The result? Chibi Cow.
All hail chibi cow.
Elsewhere, I at one point decided to delete extra straps from the Motoko Kusanagi model. Deleting these few unused polygons had unbeknownst to me created a shift in the vertex numbering system. The result? Poor Motoko appeared with 80's hair...
Jump!
If you'd like to play as this model, Here's a upl and ukx (it uses the same utx texture as the Motoko above) to add it to your game. I've entitled the character "Kabuki Kusanagi" in honor of an old NES game it reminded me of called "Kabuki Quantum Fighter", a game where your character killed people by swinging his hair. Really.
Dowanload Kabuki Kusanagi
Elsewhere, a stray "specularmap=1" setting caused Spider Jerusalem to appear as the invisible man for a short time.
While talking about the importation of the Covert Operative I joked that I didn't mind doing it because it would be no hit against my own models if I imported him upside down, walking on his hands and holding the gun with his dong. As soon as I had typed the sentence, I knew I had to try it. Unfortunately I was not in the mood to model a dong, so he simply holds his weapon with his feet...
If you'd like to have the "Inverted Operator" in your game, here is the UKX mesh file for this model (again, this add on requires the regular edition from above).
Download Inverted Operator
...Thank you, and happy fraggin. |
