Minnesota North Stars - Gone But Not Forgotten

I discovered Minnesota North Stars hockey with the help of my Dad. He took me to my first game at Met Center when I was twelve. I can remember watching greats like Bobby Smith, Neal Broten, Dino Cicarelli, and Don Beaupre when they were all rookies. I received a North Stars jersey for Christmas one year and I wanted to wear it to school every day, but my Mom wouldn't let me. On nights when they played out West, I would go to bed wearing my headphones listening to Al's play-by-play.

When the North Stars made their final run for the Stanley Cup in '91, my friends and I were convinced that this would be "the year". After exhausting every means of getting playoff tickets we ended up watching all the games on television. Even though they lost in the finals, we were proud of "our" Stars and we were proud to wear the Green and Gold.

Now that the NHL is here again, I look back on all the good memories and hope that my son, who will be six next year, will experience as much fun and joy with the game as we did.

With the last seconds ticking away in the final game, long time North Stars announcer, Al Shaver, closed shop on a 26-year old tradition.

Al Shaver

"It's Ludwig, giving it to Dahlen ... 4,3,2,1 ... and it's all over. The Stars lose it here, 5-3, and now it's pack-'em up time and on to Dallas. We wish them good luck. And to all the North Stars over the past 26 years, we say thank you, all of you, for so much fine entertainment.

"It's been a pleasure knowing you, Minnesota's loss is definitely a gain for Dallas - and a big one. We thank you, though, from the bottoms of our hearts, for all the wonderful nights at Met Center, when you've given us so much entertainment and you've been such a credit to the community in which you played. We will still remember you as the Minnesota North Stars. "Good night, everybody. And goodbye."
