| Class A 1-126 Class B 128-191 Class C 192-223 ARP- IP and MAC addresses WINS (LMHOSTS)- IP and NetBIOS names DNS (HOSTS)- IP and domain names DIALUP PROTOCOLS SLIP- NO dynamic IP addressing, NO compression, NO encryption PPP- dynamic IP addressing, compression and encryption share level- 9x peer to peer user level- NT client/ server Network Components Repeaters and Hubs - regenerate and retransmit data to all ports on the network. Repeaters and hubs do not translate or filter signals. Bridges - filters signals between LAN segments to reduce traffic bottlenecks Switches - works like bridges but passes data at higher speeds Routers - passes data through LANs or WANs. Not used on non-routable networks like NetBEUI. Gateways - translates packets through LANs or WANs so different protocols can communicate with each other
