If a couple of students shoot up their school, they're acknowledged as sick after the fact; yet millions of other children live day in and day out in the same state of emotional torment, but are simply too timid to act it out. If a mother murders her children she is brought to trial, and is likely to plead not guilty by reason of insanity. But again this is merely the one in a million who acts out the underlying pathology afflicting the masses, which in this case is a warping and debilitation of the maternal instinct on a scale unprecedented in recorded history.
If a young person exhibits bizarre behavior, destructive to himself or others, that's modeled on the violent actions of characters in his favorite electronic game, an observant therapist may note the connection. But how many parents or pundits ever question the nature of the activity itself, and ask what effect it may have on the collective psyche that legions of people from earliest childhood spend countless hours entranced by repetitive actions portrayed on small flickering screens? If a sane observer from a more natural past came and walked among us and witnessed this, what would he think?
In a way it's a moot question, because the hypothetical time-traveller would be too boggled by the spectacle of the effect which all the media and technology together have on human beings in the present age. I think that after he had recovered from the shock, he would ask himself: "Why do all these people want to live like hypnotized zombies in a big mechanical anthill? They must be crazy!"
A major part of the madness is the infatuation with technology itself. Many people have a kind of religious awe of science and tech, which leads them to espouse incredible cultoid belief-systems, and the astronomical IQs of some of them seem only to inflate the whole pathology. Later I'll make a case that the very concept of "artificial intelligence" is one such folly; meanwhile, I'll settle for pointing out that the acceptance of this science fictional notion as fact has led some of the leading lights of this culture to imagine that the human species will someday be replaced as the dominant life-form on Earth by intelligent, self-aware robots or androids. And as if this weren't crazy enough, the hardcore true believers WANT this to happen -- it's a veritable perverted wet dream of the geek-nerd avant garde. I hope that there is enough humanity left in the people who read these words to viscerally grasp the sheer, sick insanity of this delusion. And the worst part is that a great deal of leading-edge scientific research and development is driven by those who labor under it, trying to make their techno-masochistic fantasy come true. No one in authority will indict these heirs of Victor Frankenstein for treason to the human race, because the ranks of the global power structure from top to bottom are equally infected with the same mass madness.
