It was an inhospitable and somewhat gloomy place, besides which the January weather was an unpleasant contrast to his homeland, but the tall Texan could not resist grinning to himself as he threw the car into another corner. A four-wheel drift became a brief scrabble for grip from the rear tires as he powered up the straight past the bystanders gathered by the pits. It was that sound, an uneven, hobbling beat which, as the revs rose, gathered itself into an enveloping roar that peaked in an urgent, hollow sound. Then just as abruptly as it had started the sound ceased and the testing was complete. The year was 1962, the place was Silverstone: the man was Carroll Shelby; the car-the first Cobra.
