(Sunshine Marigold walks onto the darkened stage, carrying a flat black book. The spotlight follows her, the only light in the room.) Sunshine Marigold sits down. (Sunshine Marigold opens the book and slowly leafs through it. Despite the dimness, you can see the gold metallic letters on the front cover: "Washington High School, 1996-1997." She turns a page.) Sunshine Marigold's face went chalk white. (Sunshine Marigold stares at the yearbook, running her hands over the thin paper. She looks upset.) (Sunshine Marigold closes the yearbook.) Sunshine Marigold stands back up. (Sunshine Marigold exits the stage, which immediately goes black. A somber piano echoes through the silence. The lights come back on a few minutes later, revealing a crowded school hallway. Small clusters of students are gathered, examining their newly-purchased yearbooks and laughing. Sunshine walks back onstage, and a group calls her over to sign their books.) Sunshine Marigold sings sweetly: "Dear Amy, see you in September Hope that you remember me next year" Sunshine Marigold smiles and hugs one of her friends, then accepts another book for her signature. Sunshine Marigold sings sweetly: "Hey Jamie, you've been a great friend to me, I hope that I'll still see you around here" Sunshine Marigold grins , handing the book back. As she does so, she points out something, and asks her friend a question. Sunshine Marigold sings sweetly: "'Cause I'm looking through the yearbook, Then I find that empty space" (Sunshine Marigold 's friends stop what they're doing and stare at her, but she continues talking, oblivious to their distress.) Sunshine Marigold sings sweetly: "There's a name without a picture, But I can't forget his face" (Sunshine Marigold is left alone, as the kids all walk away abruptly, avoiding her question.) Sunshine Marigold sings sweetly: "Tell me where did he go, I want to know, Where did Johnny go? It says, "Picture unavailable" right here" (Sunshine Marigold shows her yearbook to a passing senior, but he just glances at her, as if she's digging up a corpse. Then he moves on.) Sunshine Marigold sings sweetly: "More than sad, it makes me mad, To know somebody knows" (Sunshine Marigold 's face is a mass of confusion and fear.) Sunshine Marigold sings sweetly: "There's a lying in your silence. Tell me where did Johnny go?" (Sunshine Marigold enters a classroom, and is greeted by a sea of accusing glares.) Sunshine Marigold sings sweetly: "Poor Katie, She won't even speak his name None of us will ever be the same" (Sunshine Marigold just stares back, and the unasked question rests between them. When they don't answer, she runs back out into the hallway.) Sunshine Marigold sings sweetly: "It's quiet in the halls, But I hear echoing off the walls The rumors of Johnny's mystery" (Sunshine Marigold runs her hand over the white plaster, leaving a dirty smudge.) Sunshine Marigold sings sweetly: "'Cause I'm looking through the yearbook, Then I find that empty space No he never wrote me nothing But I can't forget his face" (Sunshine Marigold closes her eyes and slumps against the wall.) Sunshine Marigold sings sweetly: "Tell me where did he go, I want to know, Where did Johnny go? It says, "Picture unavailable" right here" (Sunshine Marigold picks up a copy of the yearbook and double-checks, to make sure she isn't just imagining this whole thing.) Sunshine Marigold sings sweetly: "More than sad, it makes me mad, To know somebody knows. There's a lying in your silence. Tell me where did Johnny go?" (Sunshine Marigold enters the school library, avoiding the glances from the librarian and other students there.) Sunshine Marigold sings sweetly: "Ohhh There's a lying in your silence. Tell me where did Johnny go?" (Sunshine Marigold sits down at a microfiche machine, and starts scanning the newspapers.) Sunshine Marigold sings sweetly: "Ohhh There's a lying in your silence. Tell me where did Johnny go?" (Sunshine Marigold leans back in her chair, finding no mention of Johnny anywhere. It's as if he never existed.) Sunshine Marigold sings sweetly: "Sometimes I think I hear him calling out my name Sometimes I wonder if maybe we're to blame..." (Sunshine Marigold continues to stare at the machine as the lights dim, and the room goes black. Yet even in the darkness, the piano music continues. The lights come back on to showcase the same school hallway as before, with the same clusters of students, now older. Sunshine is among them, chattering with her friends as she checks out their books.) Sunshine Marigold sings sweetly: "It's been a year now, And a lot of things have changed..." (Sunshine Marigold drops a book, and it falls open to a page near the back. As she leans over to pick it up, she pales, and a sad look crosses her face for a moment, before she hands the book back to it's owner.) Sunshine Marigold sings sweetly: "But I keep thinking about Johnny..." Sunshine Marigold sings sweetly: "I keep turning to that page." Sunshine Marigold sings sweetly: "Where did he go? I want to know. " (Sunshine Marigold glances at the wall, where the same smudge she made a year ago is still visible.) Sunshine Marigold sings sweetly: "There's a lying in your silence... Tell me where did Johnny go?" (Sunshine Marigold turns back to her friends, and smiles nervously. The lights dim again, as the piano fades into the background.) Sunshine Marigold bows. Noodles Holland sings sweetly: "I can't get you out of my head" (Noodles Holland bangs his head...he always seems to do this, doesn't he?)
