Dateline 7/22/2000: IMPROMPTU PVP DISCUSSION

Wanna rumble?  Wanna talk PvP?  Come to the Reality Cafe Saturday (today!) at 4:00

[The Reality Cafe, Main Dining Room]
The sweet aroma of fresh-brewed coffee envelops you in this festively tropical
 room.  The walls have been painted a soft sage green and are covered with colorful
 tropical paintings.  An enormous salt-water aquarium has been built into one wall
 behind a marble-topped counter.  Tall, potted palms and overflowing baskets of
 hanging plants offer an air of privacy to the elegantly decorated tables and
 booths.  You also see Trixie Perry.

GameMaster Siri Macallan just arrived.
Siri Macallan waves.
Siri Macallan says, "Howdy."
Siri Macallan says, "I don't really want to use the Cone of Silence for this gig,
 because ... well, it's so stuffy."
Siri Macallan sits down.
Siri Macallan says, "So if we can manage to sort of settle, and take things
 politely and one at a time, we should do fine."
Julie McCoy says, "This could be heated."
Julie McCoy raises an eyebrow at Siri Macallan.
Julie McCoy says, "After last night..."
Siri Macallan says, "Well, I'm going to soap box a little about that before we
 start."
Siri Macallan says, "So I'd really like everyone to listen and try to hear, and not
 just dismiss things out of hand because you don't agree."
Siri Macallan asks, "Fair enough?"
Siri Macallan says, "In return, I'll try to do the same when it's my turn to be
 quiet and listen."
Siri Macallan says, "First, let me go over some background thoughts as to why we've
 got what we've got."

Siri Macallan says, "Nope, I have two hours, then I have to do stuff on my
 Saturday."
Siri Macallan says, "You know, clean house, play with my kids, do domestic things."
Julie McCoy says, "What a concept."
Julie McCoy grins.
Siri Macallan says, "I know ... it's unheard of."

Siri Macallan wrinkles her nose at Julie McCoy.
Courtney Chisolm says, "Well, let's not be wasting these two hours then. I hope we
 can all agree on something here."
Siri Macallan says, "Without further ado, let's dive in."

Siri Macallan says, "PvP has been, as most of you know, something I've personally
 wanted for a long, long time.  As long as it's limited, and the people who don't
 want to participate can't get hurt.  Those have always been the parameters."
Siri Macallan says, "If you don't want to do it, don't do it."
Siri Macallan says, "Having said that, this is not just my gig.  It was something
 that many of us decided was a good thing, if done right.  As far as the current
 system goes, it's about as fair as you can get."
Joy Nalewi asks, "So, is this going to be a permanent thing?"
Joy Nalewi furrows her brow.
Siri Macallan says, "Now, the "system" and the storyline are two different things."
Siri Macallan says, "And we need to keep those separate our minds."
Siri Macallan says, "Just hold the thoughts for now."
Siri Macallan says, "Let me say my say, then I'll note who wants to ask, talk,
 etc."
Siri Macallan smiles.
Siri Macallan says, "The difference between what can be done, and how its done is
 different than who does it and why."
Siri Macallan says, "Most of the concerns I've heard about haven't regarded the
 actual system, but who and why."
Siri Macallan says, "And that's something I'm not sure the GMs really should try to
 control.  A lot of the 'problems' have to do with people who have decided to play
 someone whose taken the "bad" path, for whatever reason, and others don't like
 it."
Siri Macallan says, "Some of the other problems have to do with perceived fairness,
 and we can get to that later."
Siri Macallan says, "So what I want you to think about is 1) Are your concerns
 about the actual system, or 2) OOC/personal perceptions regarding others'
 activities."
Siri Macallan says, "Face it, just because people want to play someone on the shady
 side, it doesn't mean they're bad people.  It is (or should be) a character
 decision.  And we don't have to like all our friends characters."
Siri Macallan says, "There's no rule in the RP handbook that says our friends have
 to play "nice" folks."
Siri Macallan says, "Now, PvP is, in one form or another, here to stay.  The
 storyline fronting the system will morph, as storylines always do."
Siri Macallan says, "Remember that this all just started a bare 10 days ago."
Siri Macallan says, "This is baby stuff.  And people have hardly had time to settle
 in, much less be non-reactionary."
Siri Macallan says, "Give people, the storyline, and characters a chance to grow,
 before you decide that everything's bad and your friends aren't friends."
Siri Macallan says, "If you need to sit back and just watch for a while, then
 that's fine."
Siri Macallan says, "Just don't judge the people who are participating."
Siri Macallan says, "It's really not up to any of us to judge what people choose to
 do or not do, unless of course, they're breaking policy."
Siri Macallan says, "And that's a whole other ball game."
Siri Macallan grins.
Siri Macallan says, "So, that's my schpiel."

Danie Roberts says, "I'm not sure this'll be helpful, but I'll at least make it
 fast via the wonders of cutting and pasting."
Danie Roberts grins.
Siri Macallan grins.
Danie Roberts says, "Part of it, I think, is that it's changed the feel of the
 game. That's gonna take some getting used to."
Siri Macallan nods.
Danie Roberts says, "I do love that there was thought put into its introduction,
 that it's not just random violence, that there's a story to play out if you choose
 to.  I also love that we have a situation where we, as players, can change the way
 things work out, rather than viewing it as an audience would."
Siri Macallan says, "Absolutely."
Danie Roberts says, "But part is that the game rules and the IC explanation for
 them are a little confusing, and somewhat muddy.  In a fantasy type of game, the
 game rules are the reality you have to work with, but here on Modus, we take our
 real-life rules and try to make them apply. "
Danie Roberts says, "So when certain things don't add up according to what we're
 used to or what we know of the real world, we have only the game rules to fall
 back on, and those game rules become the "law" in Morada.  If that makes any
 sense.   I think that's why we're seeing a lot of IC/OOC emotions."
Siri Macallan nods.

Siri Macallan says, "Part of the problem with that is also time constraints on the
 part of the staff."
Danie Roberts nods.
Siri Macallan says, "We simply can't be here all the time to make things go as fast
 as we'd like."
Courtney Chisolm asks, "You can't?"
Danie Roberts says, "I mean that some things, like Morada's version of 'martial
 law' differs from anywhere in the world... "

Siri Macallan says, "For example, in the real world, Chavez would be accessible
 most of the time."
Julie McCoy says, "You have to be domestic gods and goddesses."
Danie Roberts nods to Siri Macallan.

Siri Macallan says, "And there just ain't no way she and Ghent can be around all
 the time, or any of the other NPCs who are facilitating."

Siri Macallan says, "They still can't talk if no one runs 'em."
Danie Roberts says, "Or that if you don't have a license to kill, you're protected.
 Sometimes I don't know how to deal with those facts in an IC manner.  Pretend
 they're as they'd be IRL?  Go with them and call them Morada's reality? "
Siri Macallan says, "And that's a limitation of staff time and resources."

Siri Macallan says, "I tend to dive into the willing suspension of disbelief quite

 and non-licensees is that many people want to be a part of things, be involved
 with the "group" but don't want to get involved with the gun slinging."

 distinction IC."

 to make it different and still "work"."

 off everything I believe in just because my player doesn't like PvP?"

Siri Macallan says, "I'm not going to tell anyone how to play their character, but
 I am going to expect you to work on it yourself.  There IS middle ground."
Alouis DeLaGlynn says, "People want to engadge freely in the story, but not in PvP."
Siri Macallan says, "So don't engage in it."
Siri Macallan says, "The storyline isn't just about PvP."
Siri Macallan says, "It never has been."
Joy Nalewi says, "You can RP all you want without hitting anyone... be creative."

 entirely.  There are many ways to defend that have nothing to do with picking up a
 weapon."

 still backing down, even if he's still defending by working with the PD"

 minute rule... simply because, once you "DIE", you're at your weakest... and then
 on TOP of that, you can't even defend yourself."
Alouis DeLaGlynn says, "Theoretically, if people keep chasing you, you could be
 kept in the penalty box forever, dieing over and over and not being able to defend
 yourself."
Siri Macallan says, "It's an aspect of the character you could RP though. Dang,
 STRUGGLE with it, Alouis."

 assassin. He can not hit it, his friends have been for the most part unable to hit
 it, and it attacks over and over again, ignoring everybody but him. Is this part
 of Ghent's powers, and is that fair?"

Siri Macallan says, "That's part of the problem in allying yourself with Ghent."

 totally involved in the who and why, I've found tremendous animosity towards my

 those assembled, two things. Forgive me if I ramble and make little sense, as I'm
 kinda under the gun here on the mainland. First, I'm having a blast being the bad
 guy, and on an IC level I thorougly enjoy making you all mad. However, I'd hope

 realistic to RL circumstances, it really does detract from my game play. It's
 gotten to the point, where I am afraid to attack. Not because I'm afraid to losose
 my money, cause god knows I've been poor all my life. I do have a problem with
 being stuck in KP for an hour while the action is going on. I know there probably
 is no solution, and I should just stop complaining, but I just wish there was a
 way that I could not be hindered in the whole process. Thanks...Oh and by the way,

 what i was actully the most upset by, and with other things more personal
 compunding my emotions last night, i actually ended up going off on everyone and

 I've played Dragonrealms, another Simutronics game.  I loved pvp.  If you play DR,
 you'll understand when I say I was one of the people hanging around the Lich Gate
 waiting to spar people, or running from guildhall to guildhall issuing
 challenges. "

 should be any time penalty for being killed.  If you kill someone however, you
 should get a small penalty.  Maybe 5 or 10 minutes.  30 minutes is a long time and
 having to wait that long before knocking someone out who is potentially a threat
 won't be pretty.  "
