Phoebe Adams says, "I hope to refresh some people's memories on how to RP"
Phoebe Adams says, "Especially since we have that party coming up"
Phoebe Adams says, "We are going to start with the basics--Names, character
 history/developement, and staying IC"
Phoebe Adams says, "I'm sure everyone is aware of the genre and time line of
 MO"
Phoebe Adams says, "Modern time on a Caribbean island"
Phoebe Adams says, "Therefore, let's choose names that fit such a genre"
Phoebe Adams says, "Everyone has done great in choosing their names"
Phoebe Adams says, "A lot of you have been very creative"
Phoebe Adams grins.
Phoebe Adams says, "But"
Phoebe Adams clears her throat loudly.
Phoebe Adams says, "We need to stay away from famous names"
Phoebe Adams says, "It's really hard to RP such a character and it gets a bit
 distracting"
Phoebe Adams says, "Now, I know we get a little goofy sometimes and want to
 shake things up"
Phoebe Adams says, "But always remember there are others on the island and it
 ruins the RPing for them"
Phoebe Adams says, "Also, remember the age of your character"
Phoebe Adams says, "If you decide to portray an 80 year-old woman, don't name
 her Tiffany"
Phoebe Adams grins.
Phoebe Adams says, "That didn't get popular until much later in the century"
Phoebe Adams says, "When choosing a name, think of age, where the person is
 from, etc."
Phoebe Adams says, "If you choose a name that sounds French, it might be fun
 to portray them  as French"
Phoebe Adams says, "Or whatever"
Phoebe Adams says, "But please, please choose a realistic name"
Phoebe Adams grins.
Phoebe Adams says, "Now, I'm not sure how many of you have ever taken an
 acting class, but character developement is similiar to acting and what one
 does to prepare for a role"
Phoebe Adams says, "When actors prepare for a role, they generally make some
 sort of history"
Phoebe Adams says, "Even if they are playing an established character"
Phoebe Adams says, "That way they know the reason their character is reacting
 the way they are"
Phoebe Adams says, "So, it's kinda like profiles for your characters"
Phoebe Adams says, "An example:  One of you decide to play a 30 year old
 secret agent"
Phoebe Adams says, "Your profile of that character tells you that he/she grew
 up with alcoholic parents"
Phoebe Adams says, "Didn't finish high school"
Phoebe Adams says, "Shuffled around Europe for a bit before being picked up
 to spy for a country"
Phoebe Adams says, "You hate drinking and are very street smart"
Phoebe Adams says, "Perhaps you educated yourself in classics"
Phoebe Adams says, "Now, you wouldn't find your character getting drunk in
 the pub spouting off about how upset you are that your Enlish teacher gave
 you a C on your thesis that day"
Phoebe Adams says, "That's what whispers are for"
Phoebe Adams grins.
Phoebe Adams says, "Or say you grew up hunting for food"
Madison Bennet chuckles.
Phoebe Adams says, "You wouldn't be upset that we may open a hunting
 range...you'd get your gun and see if you still had it."
Phoebe Adams says, "Try to think up something about your character up until
 they came to Morada."
Phoebe Adams says, "That way you know how they would react"
Phoebe Adams says, "This is also good for staying in character or IC"
Phoebe Adams says, "Now, developing a character"
Phoebe Adams says, "If you take the time to truly develop one, then you'll
 love him/her and stay IC more often"
Phoebe Adams says, "I know when I first started playing it took me 3 tries
 before I hit upon the character I ended up playing for two years"
Phoebe Adams says, "If you feel comfortable in that person's skin, it's
 easier to stay IC"
Phoebe Adams grins.
Phoebe Adams says, "And I know you develop good friendships here and it's
 hard to stay IC all the time"
Phoebe Adams says, "But try to limit RL discussions to whispers and private
 areas"
Phoebe Adams says, "Please remember that you aren't the only one playing MO,
 and that RL might intrude on someone's RPing"
Phoebe Adams says, "That's what MO is for...RPing."
Phoebe Adams says, "So that brings me to the last bit of advice"

 let's lose the emotiocons."
Phoebe Adams says, "It's disruptive to people who are trying to RP"

 forum, and I think this is the best place to address the fact that I am 
 tired of people whispering to me on this character and others that I have, 
 "who are you?""

Mae Jemora says, "it is very annoying and I'm tired of it and I wish people
 would realize that there are some who really do enjoy roleplaying"

 is bad"

Phoebe Adams says, "Now, if that person wants to tell you who they were in a
 previous life, that's fine"
Phoebe Adams asks, "But what if it's a newbie?"
Phoebe Adams clears her throat loudly.
Phoebe Adams says, "I mean a new tourist"
Phoebe Adams says, "It makes that person want to leave and not come back
 because we aren't 'true' RPers"
Phoebe Adams says, "I've played many games where I said AFK to my partner
 when no one else was around and got killed by the gods"

Benton Fraser says, "However, I am a popular TV character, and I try to RP
 as if he was here in MOrada."
Phoebe Adams nods.
Phoebe Adams says, "I don't want you to think we want you to reroll"
Phoebe Adams says, "If you are RPing, that's fine"
Benton Fraser says, "OK, that's good to know."
Phoebe Adams says, "But everytime a good movie comes out, or a new album we
 get a glut of Leo's, or Puff Daddy's"

 appropriate."

Madison Bennet says, "Just a bit of advice -- for the person completely new
 to the role play environment, take a character and just play yourself. 
 It's the easiest thing to do to get used to the interaction.  Role-play is
 in some ways an art.. much like acting; at times ya have to be quick on the
 draw or witty, but if ya start with yourself and expand outward, the end
 result will be a well-developed character. :)"
Phoebe Adams says, "Well, that's a good point, but make sure you can play
 your age"
Madison Bennet says, "I've been role-playing for several years, and although
 I have several well-developed characters, I start anew each time... just to
 get an idea of the genre, time period and surroundings."

 wondering if that is considered bad rp-ing (to discuss the death of someone
 famous, e.g.)"

Phoebe Adams says, "Considering we all come from the mainland, no, but if
 you really feel the need to discuss it, then meet up in the pub or cantina"
Phoebe Adams says, "And as long as you are RPing an American when an
 AMerican dies"

 from the tv in the pub etc."

Bryan Hit asks, "i, too, am based after a RL celebrity, and i RP to the hilt
 that i really am that person on Morada. However, i also have friends who
 play characters in the same band this character is a member of. they are
 not as high in noto as me. would they need to change their names?"
Phoebe Adams says, "As I've said, we aren't expecting people to reroll"

Benton Fraser says, "Why don't the NPC's RP more? Is it just a lack of
 GM/Hosts to do that? Then, for example, ones like Lazlo suddenly disappear
 for no reason. By the way, I still think Rosalie turned him into the
 cricket! Anyway, I would love to just apply to take over an NPC a few hours
 per week without having to obligate myself"
Benton Fraser says, "...for the 12 hour min. required of Hosts."
Phoebe Adams blinks.
Phoebe Adams says, "Well, NPCs aren't run by GMs"
Phoebe Adams says, "Unless there's an event going on"
Benton Fraser asks, "What about Lazlo then?"
Benton Fraser asks, "And Shreve being possesed every so often?"

Phoebe Adams says, "You know, the NPCs aren't here except to help with
 mysteries and the such"
Benton Fraser says, "I didn't realize that."
Phoebe Adams says, "It's better to use your own RPing skills than to rely on
 NPCs"
Benton Fraser says, "I thought they were supposed to make the island more
 interesting."
Benton Fraser says, "Because they're hardly ever used."
Phoebe Adams says, "Well, I know when I play, I use the NPCs my own way"
Benton Fraser shrugs.

Phoebe Adams says, "It's easy to use your imagination"
Benton Fraser says, "I also find it helpful sometimes to discuss RP actions
 with fellow players. It would be great if a GM would be available RP
 development consultation, but again, I'm sure resources for that are
 limited. That's why I'm at least very grateful for this forum. Ben Rus was
 the best RP'er I knew, and he was going to start some classes.
 Unfortunately, I don't think he ever transferred to the Web."

Benton Fraser says, "I know some of the tasks seem to be 'delegated' or at
 least have a GM to address the subject."
Phoebe Adams says, "But I'm available to answer questions, as are all the
 GMs"

 player-mystery thing. I've always wanted to write one, but I'm kind of
 discouraged because of the whole "if it isn't done by a GM, then it isn't
 worth looking into" attitude."

 to do anyway? Not that rewards aren't nice, but players in my opinion
 should RP on their own accord."

May Davenport says, "With this RP thing, I try my best to stay away from the
 mainland. One time I even RP with two other guys very hard and we didn't
 get a thing. So um what kinids of things do you have to do? I missed the
 first part just like Cat Jacobs and Im going to miss the rest after this."
