Until I can figure out how to do this HTML thing better, I won't have actual downloadable MP3 and WAV files for people to sample.

But, while everyone (read: no one) waits for me to figure out all that (read: waits for me to take time to learn all that) I will list the songs and album information of the Spooky Tunes I'll eventually have available for sampling.

Spooky Tunes!

This section of The Spider's Web features a selection of songs from various artists and albums with a common theme: they're all Spooky or Eerie and make great mood music for the darker things in Elanthia. Lornon ceremonies will never be the same again after using a Spooky Tune to help get you in the mood and into the theme of that special sacrifice or other blood offering in Elanthia.

Here's a key to help everyone better understand how each Spooky Tune's information is listed.

Artist: This, of course, is who is performing the tune.
Track: The name of the song in question.
Album: Album the song in question is featured, or other notable releases of which I'm aware.
Notes: Any notes on the album, track or artist I should mention, such as availability or performer notes.
Usage: How I personally use said tune in my play time, or ways I envision them being useful.

For ease of viewing, if the same artist does other notable Spooky Tunes on the same album, the other songs will be listed in the same entry, separated with ; between tracks. This is not possible for compilations, as they are compiled of various artists and my list is based primarly on the Artist listing.

And now, the Spooky Tunes...

Spooky Tune of the Month

July 2001: Mephisto Walz, "Mephisto Waltz"

  • Artist: Mephisto Walz (not a typo)
  • Track: Mephisto Waltz
  • Album: Available at their home at MP3.com for stream at Mephisto Walz at MP3.com
  • Notes:People can order a compilation, containing this song, from their above site.
  • Usage: This song can be used for anything. Hell, I'll dance to it at my wedding, this I promise. Her voice is simply beautiful, the music moves from bleak, persistant desolation to something angelic, inspired and strong. It's difficult to properly describe, it must be heard.

The List of Spooky Tunes

  • Artist: Einstürzende Neubaten
  • Track: Halber Mensch
  • Album: Halber Mensch
  • Notes: Not an easy album to find, mostly in German. 1995 release, plenty of uneventful industrial sounds on this one. The title track, however, is extremely eerie.
  • Usage: This track, as noted, is extremely eerie. It is completely vocal, utilizing a choir and only a choir. It has very spooky movements and ... I can't say much more than 'It's extemely eerie.' ...eerie.

  • Artist: The Electric Hellfire Club
  • Track: Bela Lugosi's Dead
  • Album: The Passion of Covers: A Tribute to Bauhaus
  • Notes: This album is extremely difficult to find these days, I hear it was a limited release. Not to mention it's not exactly mainstream music, so you'll likely never find it at Record Town or Peaches.
  • Usage: Many uses, this one. The sound can fit almost any Lornon ceremony, helping the player tune to a mood fitting to the playing of a ceremony or just being spooky.

  • Artist: The Shroud
  • Track: The Passion of Lovers
  • Album: The Passion of Covers: A Tribute to Bauhaus
  • Notes: This album is extremely difficult to find these days, I hear it was a limited release. Not to mention it's not exactly mainstream music, so you'll likely never find it at Record Town or Peaches.
  • Usage: I use this tune in particular when I play my rarely played Ivas dancer.

  • Artist: Christian Death
  • Track: Lost Minds(remixed by THD); Spiritual Cramp(reconstructed by Electric Hellfire Club);Sleepwalk(remade by Lights of Euphoria); Figurative Theatre(Die Krupps remake)
  • Album: Death Mix
  • Notes: This album is relatively easy to find, with minimal searching. Lot of nice remixes of old Christian Death songs. Rozz's Christian Death.
  • Usage: Lost Minds...I use this tune when playing my poorly adjusted characters.. Zelians and other little lunatics. Since I've lately ditched my attempt at a Sheru serving character, this is mostly used for a certain hiccuping nutbag that occasionally pops her head around. Spiritual Cramp is a personal favorite. I'll say nothing more. Sleepwalk is..hm. Difficult to describe. And..Figurative Theatre is another personal favorite. I love this song, and it's Spooky.

  • Artist: Bella Morte
  • Track: One Winter's Night
  • Album: Remains
  • Notes: Out of Print, and when it was in print was only available on the East Coast for the most part. Bella Morte are from North Carolina I believe, and stayed mostly to local performances, visiting Richmond, VA frequently to play Twisters. You're very unlikely to get a copy of this one.
  • Usage: To be honest, I don't usually stick to the one song when I use it to set a mood for playing. This entire album is good for that. One Winter's Night sticks out to me, though, so it gets the mention.

  • Artist: Suspiria
  • Track: Allegedly, Dancefloor Tragedy; You Bleed Me; Night Time
  • Album: Dancefloor Tragedy
  • Notes: These songs are surely available on other Suspiria albums, but I only have the one and haven't felt like researching it further. The album listed can likely be found with modest effort. Other albums with this track are likely to be much harder to find.
  • Usage: These are more of the songs I'd use when roleplaying my Ivas dancer. Then again, this is another (entire) album that I can listen to for a long time, any time.

  • Artist: Interface Vs. Sinboy
  • Track: Reptile
  • Album: Covered in Nails: A Tribute to Nine Inch Nails
  • Notes: This one is easy to find! WOO! Good stuff on this one.
  • Usage: Something about the banshee performing the vocals is just spooky. It's good stuff.

  • Artist: Ex Voto
  • Track: Riders on the Storm
  • Album: Darken My Fire: A Gothic Tribute to The Doors
  • Notes: This one is fairly easy to find, has some other very neat tunes on it, too, just none that are Spooky enough to mention.
  • Usage: Come to think of it, this one is more of an ambience, not a strong mood developing tune. It's good background, hearing Morrison's voice mix with new, female vocals over the traditional Riders on the Storm music, accented with slight mutations. More orchestral with a strong beat to it. It's a good tune, with mildly spooky vocals.

  • Artist: Leæther Strip
  • Track: Vampire Hunter
  • Album: Vampire Themes
  • Notes: Should be easy to find. This album was released for the 75th anniversary of F.W. Murnau's 1922 Nosferatu, the 100th anniversary of Bram Stoker's 1897 Dracula, and the 150th anniversary of Bram Stoker's birth.
  • Usage: It's just an eerie tune, nothing more can be said.

  • Artist: Fahrenheit 451
  • Track: Beach House
  • Album: Vampire Themes
  • Notes: Should be easy to find. This album was released for the 75th anniversary of F.W. Murnau's 1922 Nosferatu, the 100th anniversary of Bram Stoker's 1897 Dracula, and the 150th anniversary of Bram Stoker's birth.
  • Usage: It's another solid spooky tune.

  • Artist: Eva O
  • Track: One in a Million
  • Album: Past Time
  • Notes: Probably available on other works, but good luck finding those! Hell, good luck finding this one. Eva O was married to the late Rozz Williams of Christian Death. She can also be heard in the Spooky Tune Lost Minds.
  • Usage: Eva O has an interesting and bizarre voice. It's rather haunting, and appropriately hard to describe. This song in particular has a rather simple structure, with precise, almost violent strikes at a violin (or something) mixed with a reversed beat. This is a truly eerie tune.

  • Artist: The Mamas and the Papas
  • Track: California Dreamin'
  • Album: This is available on compilations like The Best of... and ..hm, something or other. Original single released in November of 1965.
  • Notes: It's easy to find this song. Very easy.
  • Usage: This song is just spooky. Good harmonies can be like that. This song can be described as a lot of things (and I mean a LOT, I've asked around) but it has always struck me as 'Somber' ...it's a Spooky Tune.

  • Artist: Christian Death
  • Track: Without; Thunderstorm; Black Empire
  • Album: Prophecies
  • Notes: Fairly easy to find this one. It should be noted that Christian Death has a varying membership, depending on the time period. This album, for instance, is of Valor's Christian Death. Valor's voice can be many things, but on average is more forceful and dark than Rozz's. Actually, I don't think they should be compared, having heard a lot of each of them. It's like apples and oranges, I guess.
  • Usage: Without is part of a relatively small group of songs I think of as 'Zombie Music' .. what? Zombie Music is how I describe music that would fit as background for a movie scene where zombies are rising from their graves. I'm fond of horror films, especially zombie movies.

  • Artist: Prick
  • Track: Communiqué; Tough
  • Album: Self Titled
  • Notes: Not easy to find.
  • Usage: This isn't really spooky at all. I just think Communiqué is a kickass song, with a rhythm that has some sort of energy to it. Tough is ..hm. Brutalish. I'd imagine a chick serving V'Tull would love it.

  • Artist: The Electric Hellfire Club
  • Track: Sunday Bloody Sunday
  • Album: We Will Follow: A Tribute to U2
  • Notes: Should be easy to find.
  • Usage: First and foremost, I HATE U2. That said, my feelings are based solely on EHC's incredible performance of this song. As far as I am concerned, it should be their song and not U2's. It's more of an EHC song than it is a U2 song, anyhow. But then again, I might just be too much of a U2 Hater to comment responsibly. Geezuss I hate U2! But, this song (when done by EHC) kicks a lot of ass, and is completely spooky and nice.
