Trigonometry/Pre-Calculus

Dear Parent/Guardian:

I would like to welcome your student to my class this year. I am making the commitment to help each student maximize his/her potential in math. I expect that you and your student will join me in this commitment.

Trig/Pre-calc is the last high school course that prepares students for higher mathematical studies, especially Calculus, using a traditional approach. An emphasis will be placed on the fundamentals of Algebra and Trigonometry, and graphing calculators will be used extensively. If at all possible, you MUST invest in a TI-83 Plus or TI-83 calculator, since these are the ones used in our Calculus course, and will be suitable for use in college as well.

As a parent, you can be a key source of motivation and support for your student. Monitor their work, and if your student is not progressing satisfactorily, you can encourage her/him to seek help. Tutoring is available from myself, peer tutors and outside agencies. Students will also be using a variety of instructional materials, sometimes including graphic calculators, for classroom use only. Please understand that a fine will be imposed for materials that are lost or damaged.

Grading Policy

Grades will be determined on the basis of points earned for homework, quizzes, tests and other assignments. Grading will be done by computer, and each student’s grades will be posted regularly with privacy (by student ID number). Cheating will be disciplined to the full extent of district policy. The grading scale will be:

A 90% and above B 80 - 89% C 70 - 79% D 60 - 69% F below 60%

Homework Policy

Homework will be assigned 4 to 5 times per week, with very few exceptions. Full credit is given when all problems have been attempted and work is shown. Homework is checked for completeness, not accuracy. Late homework may not be accepted unless a student has been absent (excused).

Absences

School policy is that absences must be cleared with the attendance office by the parent/guardian within three (3) days in order to avoid a “cut”. When a student has 3 cuts in one class, s/he will lose 1 entire unit of credit regardless of the grade s/he is earning.

In the event of an excused absence, it is the student’s responsibility to make up any work missed. The student has as many days to make up the work as s/he was absent. In extraordinary cases, other arrangements can be made between myself and the student.

When you and/or the student know in advance that an absence will fall on a test day, notify me at least a week in advance, or as soon as the conflict is known. The student and I will schedule their test accordingly.

Classroom discipline

Matters of classroom discipline and tardiness will be handled according to school policies. At this age, the student should be aware of acceptable behavior, and I will regard unacceptable behavior as intentional disruption. I will speak to the student, issue detention or Saturday school, notify the parent, and refer to the office in approximately that order. Usually there should be very little problem, as the students are aware of classroom expectations. No eating or drinking is allowed in class (except bottled water).
