Shopping for a pre owned automobile?
Don't expect a salesperson or owner to volunteer any information about collision damage, an improper repair will devalue the vehicle. Your purchase should be inspected by a certified collision repair professional, and then checked for wheel alignment. Since it's not cost efficient to hire an inspector for every vehicle your looking at, we've gathered a few tips to help pre qualify your purchase.
Notice the masking tape on this vehicle. When the tape is removed there will be an edge that can be easily seen and felt with your fingers. A good repair shop will try to remove tapelines and overspray, but there is always some evidence of repaint. As you're walking around the car and opening doors, hood and decklid, feel all the edges, any roughness or sharp lines will alert you to paint work.
Most important of visual inspections are the air gaps between panels.
When crumple zones have been crumpled anything less
than a perfect unibody repair will equate to poor
alignment of doors, hood, trunk, even bumper covers.
Most manufacturers have very tight tolerances for these
air gaps so pay very close attention. As mentioned
before a four wheel alignment is a must, not only
will it show suspension damage, if there
is any unibody damage the
car will not align.
Last but not least, try to look at as many examples
of the automobile you're interested in, familiarity will help
you notice inconsistencies. If you are willing to purchase
somewhat of a less than pristine example of an automobile
use your knowledge to beat a salesperson up on price.
