Wm. A. Hagey's obituary:

HAGEY, William Anderson, 79, of Roanoke (VA), died February 21, 1999, at the Veterans Administration Hospital, Salem, VA.
He was predeceased by his parents, King Albert Hagey and Rosa Dulaney Hagey, also, brothers Harold Dulaney Hagey and Clarence Brandon Hagey.
He graduated from Emory and Henry College, joined the Naval Reserve, graduated from the U.S. Merchant Marines at Kings Point, N.Y., and was commissioned an ensign in the Merchant Marines during World War II.
An avid historian, antique collector, and genealogist, he co-authored, with his father, a 714-page book entitled "Hagey Families in America."
His extensive genealogy research covering over 400 years, and most of his earthly possessions, have been given to the Virginia Historical Society in Richmond, Va.
Surviving are brothers, King Albert Hagey, Jr. of Bristol, Tenn., Marvin Cameron Hagey of Kingsport, Tenn., David Dulaney Hagey of Mount Pleasant, Texas; and sister, Doris Hagey McGlashan of Santa Barbara, Calif.
Memorials may be made to the "Hagey-Dulaney Endowment Fund", Virginia Historical Society, Richmond, Va.

This is to give Notice. That Mr. Richard Bryan, living in King George County, is most excellent at curing the Hiack Passion, or the Dry-Gripes, the Cure of which he is dextrous in, to Admiration; for he can give Ease in a very little Time, and has often perform'd the Cure with one Dose; after the Patient had been given out as incurable, by some very eminent Physicians; and never has yet fail'd of any he took in Hand.
This Richard Bryan was the father of Ann Bryan who m. Benjamin Berryman (my 4th great grandparents)
I saw (somewhere) that the VA Assembly awarded him L50(?) for his discovery.

MY GREAT GRANDPARENTS
WILLIAM B. BERRYMAN & DICY HAWLEY BERRYMAN
Both born near Temple Hill, Barren Co., KY. Married at Bethel church - north of Cozad, NE. Died Deaver, WY.
I believe the following circumstantial evidence qualifies as proof that my 3rd great grandfather, William Berryman of NC & Barren Co., KY, was the son of Benjamin and Ann Bryan Berryman of Rowan Co., NC.
I'm still looking, but this, with a "big assist" from the 1935 letter of Marjorie Berryman (see Bmn Gen album in Webshots) is as close as I can come to proof at the present time. Marjorie was the first Berryman researcher in my immediate line. Her letter contained information from Benjamin Henry Berryman. (top photo)
After William and Mary Landers(ess) Berryman were married in Washington Co., KY they moved to Barren Co., KY.
A Sept 1823 land deed shows them living (renting?) next to Richard Wilkinson, Wm. T. Bush & Hugh Norvell (on the north side of Skaggs Cr.)
In 1827 William Berryman bought land from the Bullock estate (south of Skaggs Cr.) This land seems to be directly south of the land where Wm. & Mary were living (renting?). Since the land was 200 a. of a 750 a. estate it may not have had buildings. Wm. & Mary may have continued to live on the north land which also seems to be the land they bought from Benjamin Peden in 1852.
In 1852 the above Richard Wilkinson property is shown as belonging to Miles Wilkinson. He may have been the son of William Wilkinson who moved from Rowan Co., NC to Barren Co. ca. 1805 and lived south of Skaggs creek near Fallen Timber Cr.
This Richard Wilkinson is probably the Richard Wilkinson who married William Berryman's sister Behethlan (Hethie)Berryman in Barren Co., KY in 1815.
It would seen that the Wilkinsons (also spelled Wilkerson) and the Berrymans knew each other well since they shared many family names.
The name Battaley comes from Moseley Battaley of Spots Co., VA. He was the grandfather of Ann Bryan Berryman and great grandfather of Lucy Bryan Wilkinson. He was also the stepfather of Mary Taliaferro Berryman, the first wife of Maximilian Berryman, the parents of (below) Benjamin Berryman, of Fauquier Co., VA.
The Wilkinsons of KY spelled the name Batley or Battly while the Berrymans used the (more) correct spellings of Battaley or Batteley (from fam. Bible). This suggests Wm. & Mary got it through descent from Benjamin and Ann of Rowan Co. and not through friendship of William & Lucy Wilkinson in KY.
Lucy (Bryan) Wilkinson was a daughter of Battaley Bryan and Elizabeth Berryman of Rowan Co. (both parents were born in Fauquier Co., VA). Battaley Bryan was a brother of Ann Bryan Berryman and Elizabeth Berryman is believed to be a sister of Benjamin Berryman of Fauquier Co., VA.
I've found no other usage of Battaley in the Berryman line except in Maximilian's descendents.
Some other names are shared, suggesting the Berrymans adopted KY Wilkinson names. Examples are Miles (see below) and Anderson.
Two of the names not shared by the KY Berryman & Wilkinson families but shared by the KY Berrymans & NC Bryans are Jilson and Haden. (see below)
Jilson, Jelson - Gilson spelled with a "J" seems to occur only with Maximilian Berryman's & Benjamin and Ann Berryman's descendents (and perhaps other Berryman families living in Fauquier Co.)
Note: In Bob McAlear's bible transcription he changes (corrects?) the bible spelling of Jilson to Gilson. The photocopy of the bible page clearly shows a "J". Also in his copy "proving" Benjamin was the son of Maximilian, he changes the spelling to "G"s.
I originally thought the "J" was a church, census taker or court clerk misspelling. It may have started that way or as a narrow "G" that looked like a "J" in handwriting. At any rate, Maximilian's family appears to have adopted the "J" spelling. It serves as a rough "roadmap" in tracing the branches of the Berryman family. There are some printed "misspellings(?)" using a "G".
Recently, Bob Clark contacted Gilson Gray Berryman of Bronxville, NY. Among items that came up was that Mr. Berryman pronounced his name "Jill-son" and said that was the proper pronunciation. Perhaps this is the reason for the "J" & "Je" spellings mentioned above.
The Frankfort, Ohio County KY area and other “northern" KY, Berrymans seem to always use the "G" spelling. This probably is because the Gilson Berryman there was the great-grandson of Behethland Gilson & John Berryman (the 1st son John by Benjamin & Sarah Butler Berryman, b. ca. 1690, d. ca. 1721). The "northern" KY Berrymans therefore had a better knowledge of the origin and spelling of the name.

Regarding the William Berryman of Moore Co., NC.
I have contacted Kathryn Carter of Moore Co. NC., her family is connected to the Stephen Berryman family of "Big Pocket Creek" Moore Co. NC (ca. 1780's). Stephen Berryman left descendents in the area including a William Rufus Berryman (Wm. R. Bmn is buried in the Berryman graveyard in Moore Co).
Mrs Carter's book has a photo which is supposed to be Stephen & wife Margaret Berryman, although it appears more like a mother and son due to the apparent ages of the couple. I would estimate the photo was taken ca. 1850-1860. She also sent Stephen's family pages including burial dates and places. These Berryman family names seem to have no connection with our line.
Mr. James Vann Comer, a Moore Co. genealogist, thinks the Moore Co. William Berryman and Stephen Berryman were connected to a John Berryman of NC who served in the Rev. war.
He thinks Stephen may have been a brother, son or nephew of William. They have no evidence of a William Berryman moving to KY ca. 1815-20 or even of another William, except Stephen's above named son.
A lady from Moore Co. NC called me on the phone, saying their family had lived near the Berryman family graveyard. I asked her to send more info. but I never heard back from her. Due to my hearing problem I never got her name, figuring I'd receive a letter.
I had become convinced by then that we were descended from Benjamin and Ann and haven't done further research in Moore Co.
