Bill and Kate (and their family)

Bill and Kate are proud members of our little band of recumbenteers.

It started with Bill's BikeE RX, which Kate bought him for a birthday present.

All was coolness, and the bike was soon dubbed, "SparkE."

Then, about Christmas time, Bill bought a bike for Kate, and "RoseE" came into the family.

Life was good, indeed!  But there was more to come.  Bill and Kate had been talking with several folks about owning a tandem, and trying to decide which of the many would best suit their tastes and needs.  After several test-rides, they decided that the RANS Screamer was the one for them, and that they would eventually own one.

And so it came to pass that Bill contracted to have appear in a local shop one red RANS Screamer, without the knowledge of his dear wife.  Properly notified of the need for discretion, I made it known to Bill that the day had come for the unpacking.  Bill was on hand for that moment, as seen here.

He was also on hand for some of the assembly, including hanging the frame by a ceiling joist, as it will not fit in conventional bicycle stands.

After a time, the parts and pieces began to come together, and more closely resemble a bicycle, albeit one that most would think a bit odd.  We, of course, find its form most appealing.

A couple of weeks later, Bill brought the family to the bicycle store, and asked me if we had any tandems to rent.  I told him that we might be able to work out something on the BikeE E2 on display, and Bill asked if we had something a bit sportier.  I suggested that he might want to look at the new bike beside me, mostly hidden from the view of one just entering the store.  Bill brought Kate over, and murmured something along the lines of "Happy Anniversary, Honey."

Kate almost hit the floor in shock...

A few minutes later, she was composed enough to pose for a few pictures in front of the store, and stand away from the bike long enough that it could also be photographed.

I do so enjoy telling happy stories!!  Thanks go to Bill for all the pictures, including this one of Shadow, wishing to ride that cool bike in the foreground!

The story is not over, of course!  In mid-December, 2002, Kate came to me at the store and said, "Bill told me not to get his birthday present from you this year.  He didn't say anything about not getting a Christmas present from you."  Turnabout being fair play, or some such, I wound up helping her surprise Bill on Christmas day--he's now a member of Louisville's unofficial "Team Bacchetta!"  I hope to have a picture of him on his Strada to post here soon.
