Louisville's Relaxed Recumbent Riders' Group

Louisville Recumbent Rally, v. 2,0(00)

This, the second annual rally for the Louisville group, was held at the Louisville Water Company's pumping station on Zorn Avenue on November 5th.  Here are some pictures from John Robinson, one of three or four photographers in attendance.  John Paul was also there, and put some pictures on his own web site.  I have been given permission to copy them here, and will do so soon.  Warren Philpot has also posted some pictures on his web site.

Here is the building where we had the event.  This was built to house the steam generating equipment to power the pumping station in the days before powerful electric motors.

Then there were the bikes.  Here are a couple of styles of the Wishbone low rider bikes, along with Larry Varney's SatRDay.

One bike that has been getting a lot of exposure locally is Perry's P-38.  In the Louisville Bicycle Club's November-December newsletter, this is pictured with the caption, "The incredible rideable egg."

Tom Beuligmann brought his EZ-1 with the US Pro-drive electric motor.  This bike got lots of testing by many people through the day, including a ride by none other than the Louisville Bicycle Club President, Earl Jones, pictured by Donna as he wondered just what manner of tiger he was riding...

Earl was very pleased with the facility at the Water Company's site.  Here he is talking with Tim Meyer, who works for the Water Company and arranged for us to have our rally there.  One of the topics of discussion was the possibility of having an LBC event there at some point.

As I said, there was much test-riding of bikes after the ride.  Here are some shots of folks getting ready to try new things...

and discuss what they find.

Most of the recumbent owners really came to eat the chili we served after the ride, and talk with other recumbent owners while being there.  Here's Duc Do wondering why his picture is being taken.  Just over Duc's shoulder, you can see a man with a plaid flannel shirt.  He is none other than Mr. Roberts (who's first name I don't remember), the father of Steve Roberts, who's book, Computing Across America, got me interested in recumbents in the first place.  Mr. Roberts brought his early-model ('92 or '93?) ReBike to the gathering.  Behind his ReBike, you can see part of a Lightning R-84 carbon fiber bicycle.  Yep, more gee-whiz 'bentdom...

This was also the unveiling of the 2001 BikeE CT, at least for those of us who didn't get to attend Interbike, the big bike trade show in Las Vegas.  BikeE was kind enough to send me (at Scheller's) one of the four production samples to show at this rally.  Production bikes should be available by the end of December.  We also had the BikeE E2 (I think it should be pronounced "Et tu?") available for test-rides, and a few folks rode it.
