The Chief's organization is rich in NFL history. Founded in 1959 as the Dallas Texans by Lamar Hunt; they were a charter member of the fledging AFL. The AFL was also principally formed due to the work of Chiefs-owner Lamar Hunt who had twice been turned down for NFL franchises. Hunt is a genuine football pioneer: team and league founder, a member of the NFL Hall of Fame, a moving force behind the AFL-NFL merger, originator of the name "Super Bowl", and all-around great owner. The AFC Championship trophy even bears his name.

The organization spent three years as the Dallas Texans, moving to Kansas City after an AFL Championship in 1963. The 1960's were the heydey for the Chief's: appearing in the first AFL-NFL Championship game, (known later as the Super Bowl) culminating in a victory in Super Bowl IV -the final AFL game to be played. The '60's also saw the beginning of the fierce rivalry between the Chiefs and the Oakland-L.A.-Oakland Raiders that continues to this day. I know after 33 years of being a Chiefs fan I still hate the @#$%& Raiders!

The '70's and '80's were a generally depressing time to be a Chiefs' fan. Notable only for a thrilling (but losing) double OT Divisional Championship game versus the Dolphins and a few individual and team successes, for the most part they are memories best left in the back of our minds.

The '90's will probably be come to known as the Schottenheimer-era for the Chiefs. Known for tough, opportunistic defenses and grind-it-out offenses the Chiefs had a very successful decade with only one losing season, numerous division championships, and over 100 wins for the decade. Unfortunately this didn't translate into a Championship. With the departure of Marty and with Gunther over his successful rookie year...2000 and beyond should see a continuation of strong Chiefs teams. Hopefully strong drafts and quality free-agent acquisitions will enable this team to once again take its deserved place as an NFL Champion.
