DESPERATION

It was another hunting trip
The first day of January.
David had bought a brand new truck
For us, and our gear, to carry.

Drove down to the wildlife refuge,
San Bernard, Brazoria County.
David, me and our good friend Steve,
The three of us on that journey.

We drew our duck blind assignment.
A very good one, just our luck!
We headed out in the darkness
In David's bright, shiny new truck.

We were driving along on a levy;
A road with a ditch on both sides.
Those ditches were filled with water
From the recent rains and high tides!

We finally found a place to park,
Pulled off to the side of the ledge.
Just as we did, the side caved in--
We were dangling right on the edge!

It wasn't a very pleasant site;
The water below in that ditch!
One slight move by any of us
And over the side we would pitch!

Now, we were in a dilemma!
Our excitement it's going to 'stunt!'
Could we, safely, get our gear out
And get on with our sacred hunt?

We agonized while deciding
What's best in this situation!
Too early for a wrecker to come
Before our hunt's conclusion!

Turned out to be a fruitless hunt.
A day of frustration for me!
And would you like to take a guess,
The amount of that wrecker's fee?

He took one look at the leaning truck
And made a now famous statement,
"Which one of you's the 'hero' that
Got you in this predicament!"

So, if you ever have a need
For a wrecker on New Year's Day,
Let me tell you how difficult--
Would be better, at home, you stay!

On my personal list of bad days,
I'm sure there would never be
A day as long as the one we spent--
New Year's Day in 1990!
