INTRODUCTION
TO AN ERA
My son, David, acquired an interest in hunting early in life. But, duck hunting became his passion around Waco, Texas, while attending Baylor University. His persistent encouraging, "You need to go with me tomorrow," after graduating and returning home, stimulated my dormant appetite for the great outdoor adventures again. I'm so glad he talked me into it!
"Life is good," they said on a past, popular TV advertisement. I would quickly agree and say, "When I'm in a duck blind or a goose spread of rags, shells and full bodies, with David, Wade Liberator, Pat Moore or Steve Langford--life is good!
At the present time, we are part of a hunting lease just outside of Katy, Texas. All of the above-named gentlemen hunt on it. It is easily accessible and great hunting for geese, duck, quail, dove and snipe. However, our real bonding experiences came in the earlier years, while burning mega energy and calories, wading through the mud, muck, marsh grass and mosquitoes, carrying guns, camouflaged shell buckets weighted down with ammunition and snacks and a big sack of decoys on our backs! Now those were challenging days!
These experiences took place all the way from Anauac, Texas, just southeast of Houston, to San Bernard Wildlife Refuge southwest of Houston near Lake Jackson, Texas. During those years we would leave Houston at 3:00 AM, drive 75 miles, one way, and be home, worn out, by late afternoon. We have gotten spoiled and soft with our lease so close by! We still hunt the annual reservation hunt at the San Bernard Wildlife Refuge.
Through the years we have had good days and bad days. We have laughed together, prayed together, griped together and loved every minute of it! Things that were serious then have become sources of humorous stories now.
However, the purpose of this book is to acquaint you with some of the powerful spiritual lessons I have learned from and with these special men and through those experiences while 'sitting in a duck blind!'. It's God's nature, and He has revealed some powerful truths to me through His creation.
There are slack periods during a hunt when the ducks or geese are not flying. Numerous times I have dozed off on a brief nap only to be awakened by a shotgun blast as they pass overhead again. It is during these 'brief pauses' that my mind has searched for things God is trying to teach me through nature and His unique creatures. These are the things I want to share with you . . . and the purpose for this book!
I have picked the minds of these hunting buddies for other ideas and then used a talent I feel God has given me to communicate these truths. I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I have enjoyed writing them. Some of you 'rugged hunters' may think reading poetry is for the birds. You may be right! Come learn some things 'the birds' have taught me. I challenge you! The things you read will be familiar to you if your presence has ever graced a duck blind!
