People with increasing brain damage from any of the diseases causing dementing illness lose executive functioning processes early on. The ability to plan, organize, structure, make decisions, and sequence everyday tasks and activities of daily living is lost. Therefore, it is very important for someone else to take over or coach the person through daily events. A schedule and routine is one way to place some parameters and boundaries on the day, and will give the person with brain damage a sense of order rather than chaos.

This sample daily schedule has been adapted from information contained in Chapter 11, The Importance of Structuring and Scheduling, in Therapeutic Caregiving: A Practical Guide for Caregivers of Persons with Alzheimer's and Other Dementia Causing Diseases. This schedule is provided as a guide, and only highlights important elements of the day. Recreational and functional activities need to be incorporated in empty time slots.

For those of you who have caregivers at home, copies of the daily schedule can be utilized as a daily check list and a means of being certain key activities are accomplished.
