(Volume II) P. 822 KENDALL BRYANT, son of Abraham Bryant was born in Reading Massachusetts, in 1680. He settled in Reading a short distance west of Joseph Hartshorn's where he doubtless lived all his life following farming. He married there in 1704 ELIZABETH SWAYNE, daughter of Major Jeremiah and Mary (Smith) Swayne. All their children were born at Reading.A catalog of the brethren and sisters in full commission in the First Church in Reading, January 3, 1720-1, lists KENDALL BRYANT and his wife. --------- KENDALL BRIANT Will 1795 vol. 27 p. 71 In the name of God Amen. The Thirty first Day of May Anno Domini Seventeen hundred and forty five and in the Eighteenth year of his Majesties Reign. I KENDALL BRYANT of Reading in the County of Middx in his Majesties Province of the Massachusetts Bay in New England Black Smith Being advanced in years but of sound mind & memory. Thanks be given unto God. Therefore calling to mind the mortality of my Body and knowing that it is appointed unto men once to Die. Do therefore make and ordain this my last will & Testament. That is to say Principally and first of all I Recommend my Soul unto the hands of God who gave it hoping through the merits of my Savior Jesus Christ to have the full and free pardon of all my sins and to Inherit Everlasting life. And as for my body I command it to the earth to be buried in a Decent & Christian manner at the Discretion of my Wife and my sons Kendal & James Bryant nothing doubting but that at the General Reserection I shall receive the same again by the almighty power of God And us to that portion of Worldly goods & Estate wherewith it has pleased God to help me. I hereby give, devise & Dispose of in the following manner & form that is to say. First, I will that all my Just Debts and funeral Expenses shall be well and truly paid and Discharged in due & convenient time after my Decease. And I will & order that my son Kendall Bryant pay one half of my funeral charges and my son James Bryant the other half. But unto my just Debts I order that James shall pay the whole. Imprimis I Give and Bequeath to ELIZABETH my dearly Beloved wife (During her being my widow) The East and or Dwelling part of my now dwelling house throughout and the cellar under the same (Excepting a privilege hereafter mentioned & given to my Daughter HEPHZEBAH) and I also hereby give to my said loving wife all my within Dower moveable & Household goods to be disposed of as they please Excepting my cane wearing apparel and Syder Barrels and will that my wife shall have free privilege of the well & yard room free passing & repassing as she has occasions & that she shall have the privilege of keeping one hod every year for her life at and about the Doors & I order that my son James Bryant his Executors or administrators provide & keep my said wife one good cow as he doth his own both winter & summer & drive said cow to & from pasture and I order also that my said son James shall comfortably provide my said wife with a suitable horse kind to carry her to the public worship when she is able to attend and everywhere when she is invited to shall provide a suitable person to ride before her if she desires it. Likewise I order that my son James annually provide five cords of good firewood for my said wife but to appear lengths laid handy by her door & if need to require he shall bring in her wood build & tend her fire the above said articles to be performed by the said James Heirs Executors or Administrators. Likewise I order that my son Kendall annually in due season provide my said wife with five cords of good firewood cut to a suitable length for the fire and laid handy at her door & further I order that my sons Kendal & James their Heirs, executors or Administrators shall annually in due season and in a like proportion find & provide for my said loving wife Ten bushels of good Indian meal four bushels of rye meal, Two bushels of good malt. Two bushels of Turnips one bushel of good white beans and four bushels of good winter apples besides what she shall see cause to pick herself to eat and use at any time before apples are gathered in. Likewise I hereby order my said sons to provide her with two Barrels of Good Syder & good barrels to preserve it in and that they provide her Eighty Weight of good fat beef in proper season & shall pay her the sum of Two pounds Ten Shillings in Current Bills of Credit new Tender, or the just value thereof in other medium of Trade or Exchange Currently passing these particulars to be punctually performed annually for my said wife by my said son Kendal & son James their Heirs Executors or Administrators in a just & equal peroration so long as she continues my widow. But if said wife Marry, all the above & aforesaid privileges annual performances and payments shall cease Excepting the Two pounds Ten shilling which shall be paid to her during the term of her natural life by my said sons annually as aforesaid. And further, I will that if my said wife decease my widow That then my son James Bryant his heirs Executors or Administrators shall defray her funeral charges Giving her a Decent Burial provided nevertheless That if my said wife prove not content with what I have given her in this will That then her article or Legacy shall be void & she may take the liberty allowed her by law -- And to close this article I hereby give to my said loving wife one half of all the provisions in a house at my decease. Item. I give and Bequeath to my Dutiful son Kendal Bryant his heirs and assigns forever. Eight Acres of land lying and being in Reading first parish as the same is Butted and Bounded Viz. Westwardly on the Town Road Southwardly on the land of Dr. William Hay. Eastwardly Northwardly on the land of Ths. Nichols & Ebeneezer Damon. Together with a dwelling house Barn & sundry accommodations thereon & thereunto Belonging Likewise I give my son the said Kendal Bryant his heirs & assigns forever the following sundry parcels & pieces of upland & meadow all lying in Reading aforesaid viz: Four acres of upland containing orcharding Bounded South westwardly on the land of Benja Hawthorn also a piece of meadow & upland containing nine acres Bounding Southwardly on the land of Ebenezer Damon. Eastwardly & Northwardly on the Pond & from the pond Southward to a Stake then west to a stake. Also the just one half of my meadow called Black Bird Swamp meadow on ye land formerly Deacon Thos. Nicholas Eastwardly on the pond. Northwardly on ye land formerly Deacon Thos Boutels & on ye land of Thos. Nichols also a piece of Meadow called Eatons Meadow containing four acres as the same is Bounded also Two acres in my meadow called Lillies Meadow Bounding Northwardly on ye land Westwardly on John Goodwins meadow Southwardy as ye fence now stands and Each end a field two acres to be of an Equal Breadth and I give him the privilege of free passing & repassing as he shall have occasion & from said meadow also the one half quantity & quality of a piece of land I purchased of the Town lying at a place called New Bridges, said Kendall half to him at the east end. Also the one half of the pine swamp purchased of Ebenezer Nichols lying at the North End of Timber Neck and Divided according to Bounds which my sons Kendal & James have already made for the disposition between them, also I give the said Kendal the just one half of my Three lots lying in the Cedar Swamp and Three quarters of an acre in the ash swamp. John Dickerman and I give I give him the one half of my lot lying at Birchin plain Bounding East on the Town way northwardly & westwardly on the land of Ebenezer Nichols. Likewise I give him half my Quick stock one third of my wearing apparel one half of my Syder Barrels & my cane.Item. I give & bequeath unto my dutiful son Jeremiah Bryant or to his Legal Representative the sum of fifty pounds in current Bills of public credit new Tender or the just value thereof in other current medium of Trade or Exchange passing as money. By which I please fifty pounds with what he has already received. He having already had not less than Seventy pounds old Tender. but if I self in my lifetime or either my son Kendal or James or they jointly shall be necessitated hereafter to pay the money Jeremiah owes for the payment of which I stand Given; Then said son Jeremiah to receive no more.--This Legacy if paid shall be done by Kendall & James in equal proportions likewise I hereby give to my said son Jeremiah one third of my wearing apparel. Item. I give to my dutiful son James Bryant and to his heirs and assigns forever my Homestead containing Ten acres be the same more or less Bounding Northwardly on the Town road. Westwardly on the land of Thomas Nichols & Northwardly on the Town road. Westwardly on the land of Thomas Nichols and Southwardly on the land of Benja Hawthorn with all the Buildings in thereunto belonging (only Reserving to the use of my wife as before given to here and reserving also to my Daughter Hepzibah during her single life the east chamber privilege of the cellar and well) Likewise I hereby give to the said James his heirs and assigns forever all my other lands lying in Reading or elsewhere the one half to my son Kendall. Likewise I hereby give to the said James the one half of all my Quick stock, Half my syder Barrels all my monies and monies By Bill Bond or Book what and from whomever and I give him one third of all my wearing apparel. And half of the provisions of every Book that may be in the house at my Decease. Likewise I give him my husbandry tools and utensils all of every part. Item. I give and Bequeath to my Dutiful Daughter Elisabeth wife Deo. Thos Stimpson or to her children (with what she hath already received; viz; at marriage & since) the sum of Twenty five pounds in good Bills of Credit new on the province aforesaid or the full value thereof in current silver money of New England or other current medium of trade or Exchange passing as money & this to be performed by my son Kendall & my son James that Executors or Administration in an Equal & just proportion at the end of four years after my Decease. Provided nevertheless that whereas I have already paid sundry Legacies (for the payment whereof I was Bondsman to the Honorable Judge of probate for & with my Son Stimpson Husband of my Daughter Elizabeth & am Liable to pay more still on said Stimpson account being bound for him. Therefore my will is that Except my said son Stimpson his Executors administrators or assigns shall satisfy by repaying me or my Executor or administrators the money I have already paid through the land Stimpsons neglect and for the future have me and my Executors etc. harmless as to any Legacys or sum I stand bound with him to pay. That then (Excepting the aforesaid) my sons Kendal and James shall not be obliged to pay any thing further to my said Daughter Elizabeth etc but shall be Quit. Item I give & bequeath to my Dutiful Daughter Mary the wife of John Jonson (with what she hath already received) the sum of one Hundred and Ten pounds in Bills of Credit old Tender or Twenty seven pounds Ten Shillings new Tender or the just value thereof in current money or other current medium of Exchange currently passing as money at the time of payment. Said Legacy to be paid to her or to her Children by my Two sons Kendal and James in an Equal proportion at the end of four years after my Decease and that my meaning in this or any forgiving & following anywhere may not seem ambiguous or doubtful, where ever I have said or do say I have given or do give to any of my Children. So much (with what they have already received) I would be understood That what they have already received & may receive in my life time, shall be resigned to make the sum given them by this my will and no other will. Item. I give & Bequeath to my Dutiful Daughter Hephzibah the sum of Thirty five pounds in Current Bills of Credit new or the just value thereof in lawful Silver money of New England or other Current medium of Exchange possessing at ye time of payment and said sum shall be paid to her by my sons Kendal & James in an Equal proportion upon marriage or at the Expiration of one year after my Decease which shall first happen and Twenty pounds the Residue thereof shall be paid her at the end of four years after my decease and I order that my son Kendal pay Three pounds fifteen shillings thereof; new Tender and my son JAMES shall pay the left and further I will my said daughter Hephzibah the privilege of my East Chamber so long as she lives single; privilege also of the cellar under the last room & privilege of the well. Item. I give & Bequeath to my dutiful daughter Abigail wife of James Sterns the Sum of thirty five pounds lawful money of the province, That is to say bills of Credit called new Tender on the just in other Current medium of exchange to be paid to her or her child or children with what she hath already Received by my son Kendal and James in an Equal proportion at the Expiration of four years after my Decease. Item. Before I close I will that if my wife should Decease not having Deposed by will or whatever of what Estate she may leave, given her by me my mind is that the same shall be Equally divided among my Daughters or their Children. Likewise I will that if any other of my estate not herein mentioned be hereafter found it shall fall to my Executor and Furthermore I order hereby that my son Kendall his Heirs and assigns shall have free Cows Pasture with carts Team and to drive his Creatures to his meadows where it may be convenient & do less damage. Likewise the privilege of passing in like manner over Jameses pasture that was Hastings to & from Kendals meadow called Black Bird Swamp and I order that my said son James shall have the free privilege of passing and repassing to and form his pasture called Hastings across the land of my said son Kendal with cart Team and Creatures whenever he has occasion in the usual way; said respective privileges to be to the said Kendal & James their heirs and assigns forever. Thus ways Gates & bars and Finally I hereby numerate Stipulate and appoint my son James Bryant to be my only and the sole executor of this my will utterly Revoking all other wills Testament and Executors by me made or named Declaring this and no other to be my last will & Testament. In witness whereof I the said Kendall Bryant have hereunto set my hand and seal the day & year first above written.
