How & Where

First of all I want to make it clear that this is a personal, non-commercial site which generates no monetary compensation.  I am not affiliated with any of the organizations doing DNA testing.  I am a family history buff wanting to expand my genealogy knowledge and help others.

This page will share with you the various sites you should research before you pursue such a project and explain to you why I made the choice I did.

Since males are the exclusive carriers of the Y-chromosome, which passes down through the generations to the common ancestor's lineal male descendants, only males with the surname should be tested for the project. However, a female also can benefit from the DNA technology by having a brother, father, uncle, grandfather, nephew or cousin with the surname participate in the a DNA Project.

Before starting such a project you should visit Family Tree DNA, DNA Heritage, & Relative Genetics web sites.  Realize that you do get what you pay for and that the more markers that are tested the better the results.  All of the above are reputable sites.  Family Tree tests with the University of Arizona.  As of this writing they test the maximum of 37 markers.  Relative Genetics & DNA Heritage use Sorenson Genomics of Salt Lake.  Relative Genetics tests for 37 markers, but test results may show 43.  DNA Heritage tests for all 43 markers.  Also time may be an important factor to consider.  DNA Heritage publishes the fastest results with the average of 3 1/2 weeks.  Based on the number of markers tested and the time to receive the results, I selected DNA Heritage.
