FORWARD
A very special thanks goes to John B. Colligan for making this valuable genealogical information available to the public on-line. The material present here in this series of linked pages represents 116 pages of print information divided into 14 linked web pages. John and I not only share a passion for New Mexico genealogy, we both strongly believe in conducting high quality and credible genealogical research, preparing research findings for print or the Internet, and sharing the research with others. A great many hours of work went into preparing the 116 page comparison between the 1784 and 1787 censuses of El Paso. Please forward any messages of gratitude for the on-line availability of this material to jesquibel@yahoo.com and the messages will be forwarded to John B. Colligan

INTRODUCTION
The 1784 Census has been transcribed from Juárez Municipal Archive, microfilm roll 11, bk. 1, 1784, f. 275-345. The 1787 Census was enumerated by Fray Damián Martínez and Nicolás Soler, Census of the El Paso Area, El Paso, 9 May 1787, Juárez Municipal Archives, roll 12, bk. 1. 1787, f. 77-142.
These censuses were transcribed earlier by Dr. Rick Hendricks and published as The Center for Anthropological Research, "CAR Report 709", New Mexico State University, 1992. The current transcriber and editor compared Dr. Hendrick’s transcription with the microfilms of the Juárez Municipal Archives as available from the University of Texas at El Paso. Where discrepancies or differences in interpretation of the handwriting were found when comparing Dr. Hendrick’s publication from the current effort, those differences were resolved in meetings with Dr. Hendricks to our mutual satisfaction. The following alphabetical transcription reflects those changes from Hendrick’s earlier transcription along with a major change in how occupations are noted. Dr. Hendricks agrees that the occupation of labrador should be interpreted as a farmer, whereas he termed it laborer in his report; the word obrajero has been noted herein as laborer though it also could very well mean a person who worked in an obraje.
Numerical designations following each entry relate to numbers assigned by the enumerator in 1784; in the 1787 census no numbers were used, so I have arbitrarily assigned numbers based on where each entry appears in those documents.
Grateful appreciation is hereby acknowledged by the current transcriber to Dr. Rick Hendricks for his cooperation and assistance with this project. Any errors or omissions are strictly mine.

The entries for the 1784 and 1787 Censuses for the El Paso Area listed in Alphabetical Order with the numerical order in each census given following the entries. If the party is found in only one census, that will be apparent from the designation preceding the entry of ‘84 and/or ‘87. If the party changed location, that must be determined separately by consulting the various listings, e.g. El Paso, San Lorenzo, etc. It is also possible that some Indians are listed as citizens and visa-versa.
