By José Antonio Esquibel and John B. Colligan
Forthcoming from the Hispanic Genealogical Research Center of New Mexico
New genealogical information contributed by José Antonio Esquibel to the third volume of the Vargas Project, To the Royal Crown Restored: The Journals of don Diego de Vargas, New Mexico, 1693-94 (John Kessell, Rick Hendricks, and Meredith D. Dodge, Editors, University of New Mexico Press, Albuquerque, 1995) is found below regarding the following families recruited at Mexico City in 1693:

The research for SRNM is the culmination of a great many years of genealogical investigation by John B. Colligan and myself. Our collaboration on this massive project began in early 1992. We began to combine our historical and genealogical materials and quickly developed the two volumes, one focusing on the history of the expedition and the other focusing on the history and genealogy of over fifty families. My research into the Mexico City and Puebla de los Ángeles church records was almost finished by the summer of 1992, having extracted hundreds of records relevant to New Mexico families with roots in Mexico City in the seventeenth century. Around July 1992, John was in New Mexico conducting research and had the opportunity to be in contact with Rick Hendricks, Ph.D., a New Mexico historian working on the Vargas Project at the University of New Mexico. John mentioned to Rick that he and I were investigating the "Velasco-Farfán" colonists recruited at Mexico City in 1693. Rick was also interested in these colonists and thought by collaborating we would not duplicate each other's research efforts. Soon after, I received a letter from Rick dated August 10, 1992. In part, he wrote:
"Dear Mr. Esquibel,
A couple of weeks ago, Jack Colligan was in New Mexico to visit and continue his research. He explained to me that you were investigating the Velasco-Farfán colonists and that we all should put our heads together to prevent further duplication of our respective research efforts.
….My hope is that we can coordinate the remaining research so as to avoid furter duplication effort. I would suggest that we all pool the results of our findings. Our aim on the Vargas Project is not to provide capsule biographies of the individuals as Jack is doing. We simply want to better identify them, providing date and place of birth and parents when possible. If you are pursuing genealogical research akin to Jack's there is ample room for the publication of your more detailed study at some later date. …Naturally, any of your research that finds its way into our volumes before such time [your work is published] it will be credited to you.
…The concern that Jack and I share is that we have already duplicated a great deal of research and must avoid this in the future. I'm certain you will soon hear from Jack and can discuss this with him. He has indicated that you two have an excellent working relationship, and I'm sure he can tell you what he thinks of our work."
This letter from Rick initiated a collaborative relationship between Jack, myself, and the Vargas Project. I generously shared some of the genealogical information I had extracted from various church records. The result was that the material appeared in the footnotes of the third volume of the Vargas Project, To the Royal Crown Restored (UNM Press, 1995). This was the first time this new genealogical information had appeared in print. For those who have not come across this source, a compilation of the new material found in the book is provided below. These are not all the records that have been extracted from the church records of Mexico City and Puebla de los Ángeles, since several family lines have been traced back as much as 2-5 generations.
SRNM will have transcriptions of many pertinent banns of matrimony, marriage, and baptismal records. For an excellent example of the structure of the family histories and genealogies found in SRNM, please see "The Ancestry of Buenaventura de Esquibel, 1570-1684," in Herencia, Vol. 4. Issue 2, April 1996, 10-24, and Vol. 4, Issue 3, July 1996. This section was originally written for SRNM, but was cut because Buenaventura de Esquibel arrived in New Mexico in 1697 and was not a Velasco-Farfán colonist of 1693.
