SEPHARDIC LEGACY IN
NEW MEXICO
Under the direction of Stanley M. Hordes, Ph.D., the Sephardic Legacy in New Mexico research project is well under way. Working with Dr. Hordes are two very competent researchers, Richard Salazar (former Director of the NM Records Center and Archives in Santa Fe), and Rob Martínez. Already research has been conducted in various locations in Mexico on specific families that are most likely to have Jewish roots. In the process, new genealogical and historical information has been uncovered on these New Mexico families and will eventually be posted on this web site:
Domínguez (ONMF: 24-25) —traced to Cartagena and Puerto de Santa María, Spain
Vásquez Borrego (ONMF: 149) —traced to Spain
Pino (ONMF: 258) —traced to Italy
Rael de Aguilar (ONMF: 263)
Romero (ONMF: 95-98)
Baca (ONMF: 9-11)
In addition, new genealogical information on several families that were traced back to Spain, and which will be published in The Spanish Recolonization of New Mexico: An Account of the Families recruited in Mexico City by José Antonio Esquibel and John B. Colligan, was shared with Dr. Hordes. He and his team will follow-up on familes such as the Mascareñas (originally from Lisbon, Portugal) and the Góngora (origially from Sevilla).
At the end of September 1999, Dr. Hordes and his research team left for Spain to follow-up on valuable leads uncovered in their research of archival and church records in Mexico. They will return to New Mexico around November 20th. Any updates shared by this team will be posted here.
