Scarab Aircraft is in the business of custom building model aircraft and RC cars from kits or assembling ARF's for customers who don't have the time or inclination to do it themselves. We also have available Hitec radio systems and accessories at discounted pricing for customers. We concentrate on 25%-30% aircraft, sailplanes of all types, and electrics. We have been involved with RC flying since 1974 and have many contacts that have been built up over that length of time to use as resources for solving problems related to RC flight. Work is done in our shop with a full complement of woodworking and metal working tools and machines. As a Technology teacher for 39 years and a former National Record holding drag racer, I have learned how to accomplish many things using a myriad of tools and materials that apply to the RC business.

We fly all types of fixed wing planes, both powered and sailplanes. I especially like scale/semi-scale planes and FAST racing type planes. We used to fly Q-500's but now stick to slower, more enjoyable flying. Both my sons fly when schedules permit, and Chris and I have flown some sailplane contests together. including the Nats in Muncie, IN. Chad doesn't have time to practice with his new job, but still flies sometimes when he's home.

SU-26 (YS 120 NC) is flying and an A&A Citabria is framed and being
converted to an L-16 soon (G-23).
A Patty Wagstaff Extra 300 powered with a BME 44 power is now flying. An I'kon West L-19 is on the bench and is basically
framed out waiting for the wings to be rebuilt from being started by someone
who obviously didn't know how to read plans and built the wings upside
down! Too many planes, not enough time!!!! We're expirementing
with electrics now and several of our group are trying all types of electrics
from scale to sailplanes.
Here's one of the
H-9 Mini-Edges 
that we've set up. Also flying a YAK-54, Mini Stik, and a Hobby Lobby
L-19 (all electrics).
These are my flying
buddies, members of the Refugio Prop Busters (me on the left, Bob, Max,
Tom, Randy, Calvin, Milton, and Bill) along with the type of planes that
we may have out on any one day's flying (27% Extra down to electric Mini-Edge
540, and including sailplanes). We're not predjudiced against any
type plane ;>).
Just out the
door and now flying is a Lanier Yak 54 with BME 102 power that was
built for a local flyer, as well as another Yak 55 for IMAC
competition. Great flyers.......Will post pics soon.

I'm a licensed pilot with SEL, and Glider ratings with tow plane endorsements. Don't fly much anymore due to time constraints. The Refugio Soaring Circle is a nationally known soaring club, with many records being set from our local airport, including a cross-country record from Refugio to Hutchinson, KS non-stop (over 600 miles). We have great soaring conditions almost all the time until about 3:00 PM when the coastal wave moves in and kills the thermals (we call it the "Blue Hole"). It's really neat to soar when the hawks are migrating and to get in a thermal with them! The club owns a Grob 103 Twin, a new ASW, a 1-34, a 2-33, and a Super Cub tow plane. Many members own their own ships and many people have learned to soar in the club. The club flies almost every weekend at the Refugio County Airport (Rooke Field) off Highway 77 south of Refugio. Come and visit-rides are available!

in Europe. (He's now knee deep in restoring a Navy SNJ). Check

To keep me busy
when it's too windy to fly, a newly finished Soling 1M R/C sailboat is
now on the water and sailing. Chris has a catamaran and a Star 45,
and Chad has a US 1M rig so we can compete on the pond across the street
or the many lakes in The Woodlands. Being a member of the American
Model Yacht Association has brought new experiences and contacts with other
"small-scale" sailors. Great fun!!! Just built a new Skid-Do
Star 45 and have had it on the water tuning it for upcoming regattas.
