Outlook Express refuses to remember passwords
Despite telling Outlook Express to remember your passwords, it
keeps forgetting them. Try this:
- Go to the DOS prompt (Start/Shut Down/Restart the computer
in MS-DOS Mode).
-- For Windows 95/98 go to your ...\Windows\System
directory,
-- for Windows NT/2k/XP go to your ...\WinNT\System32
directory.
- Now type: pstores -install
- The next time you give OE your password, it should be saved.

Disconnects occur after opening Outlook Express
This may be caused
by Outlook Express attempting to get Windows to dial when a connection to
the Internet is already present. Try the following to resolve the issue:
- on the Outlook
Express toolbar select
tools | accounts
| mail tab | properties button | connection tab
- check mark the "always
connect to this account using" box
- select Local Area Network from the dropdown list.
- click apply and
ok
This will cause OE
to use the existing connection and not cause a disconnect by trying to dial
when a connection already exists.

When I try to encrypt my messages,
I get this message: "You do not have a valid digital ID in the address book.".
To solve it:
-- Check to see if something is entered in the Reply To
field under
Tools | Accounts | Mail | Your Server | Properties | General.
If there is, clear the Reply To field.
OR
-- If that doesn't work, then perhaps you have selected"Include
myself when sending encrypted mail" but you haven't added your own Digital
ID to a WAB entry.
To do that, simply send yourself a Digitally signed message
and then add your certificate to the WAB,
OR
-- UNcheck "Include myself when sending encrypted mail". |

Links In Outlook
Express mail and news don't work.
If you click on links in OE mail and news and they do not work,
it's because Outlook Express is not your default mail and news program and
IE is not your default browser. Do this:
1--In Outlook Express,
go to Tools | Options and make sure that
"Make Outlook Express my default mail program" and
"Make Outlook Express my default news reader are checked.
2--In IE, go to View
| Internet Options | Programs
and select OE for mail and news.
Also, be sure "Internet Explorer should check to see whether
it is the default browser" is checked.
If the problem persists, see:

Send mail Error indicating Server '127.0.0.1,' Protocol: POP3,Response:'-ERR307 username/password
invalid,'
It appears your pop
server call is being directed to your own machine IP=127.0.0.1, which is
a 'loop back' IP.
Judging from numerous
reports, you may find Norton, Salomon or another Utility or virus checker
altered your email pop3 server setting.
Check your pop3
server address.
If it is not pop.prodigy.net
(or the correct server for your account) then make so.
If you
use Norton AV, their published workaround recommends "you can disable
email protection:
1. Start Norton
AntiVirus and click Options.
2. Click Email
Protection in the Options list.
3. Depending on
your version:
NAV 2000 users,
uncheck "Enable email protection (recommended)",
and then click
OK. NAV 2001 users, uncheck the boxes that correspond to the protected email
clients.
Disabling email
protection does not leave you vulnerable to viruses and malicious software
in email. It is a separate layer of protection in addition to Auto-Protect.
Auto-Protect scans any incoming files, including email, as they are saved
to your hard drive. As long as you keep your virus definitions up to date
with LiveUpdate, and keep Auto-Protect enabled and set to scan files as they
are created or downloaded, your system is fully protected."
If there is still
a problem--
Check your system
for a file named C:\Windows\HOSTS which overrides the DNS. It is likely that
some caching utility like DUNce or some anonymity software is redirecting
or resetting your mail server address to 127.0.0.1
It should be pop.prodigy.net.
If you find HOSTS,
do one of the following:
- Rename the file
to something else (Hosts.bak) and then reboot.
- Open in Notepad
and look for any lines with the problem domain names. Insert a # at the beginning
of those lines to comment them out. Remember to save the file.
- Delete the file
HOSTS and disable the utility that created it.
You may find 127.0.0.1
has been inserted into one or more configuration files, or in the registry.
If HOSTS doesn't fix it, you may need to do a more extensive search for 127.0.0.1
and change it where appropriate.
If you are on a LAN,
consult your network administrator.
