Step 1: Double click on My Computer.
Step 2
If you still have the Prodigy Internet software
installed then simply double click on the Prodigy Internet icon. Enter
your UserID and Password and then click on Connect. You can skip to the
notes
section.
If you do not have the Prodigy Internet software
installed and this is the first time you have used Dial-Up Networking then
simply follow all of the instructions given by the wizard you are now looking
at. You can name the connection anything you want.
All others (including PIv5
users who wish to maintain control of their PI connection when launching
clients like Outlook Express without having their default browser and PI
homepage also launched) should double click the Make New Connection
icon and then follow the instructions given by the setup wizard.
Step 3
Now you should have a new icon in the DUN folder. If you accept the
default name is labeled My Connection. Click on this icon with the right
mouse button and then choose Properties.
Step 4
In the combo box labeled Type of Dial-Up Server
you should have
PPP: Windows95, WindowsNT 3.5, Internet. The defaults
on all of these screen are fine although several of them are not really
necessary. Click on the button that says TCP/IP Settings...
Step 5
Ensure that the radio button labeled Server Assigned
IP Address is selected.
Step 6
Click on the radio button labeled Specify name
server address.
Step 7
Enter the similar sections on that window as follows:
Prime Set of DNS Addresses for all PI users
Primary DNS: 198.83.19.241
Secondary DNS: 198.83.19.244
Alternet Set of DNS Addresses for PIv5 or above,
or DUN users only
Primary: 207.115.59.241
Secondary: 207.115.59.244
All PI DNS address the same "server".
The 207 set is preferred.
Step 8
Click on OK until you are back to the DUN folder.
You are now ready to double click the icon, enter your Prodigy Internet
ID and Password and then click on Connect. Be sure to check out the notes
section.
NOTE:The following steps are meant for those running NT 4.0 and it is assumed that you have a moderate level of experience with computers. Although generally speaking the steps are correct, you may have more or less screens to deal with in order to setup a DUN with your configuration. These are the steps that I took to install a DUN on my machine running NT 4.0 Server.
Step1
Double click on My Computer.
Step2
Double click on Dial-Up Networking.
Step3
Click on OK.
Step4
Enter a name and click on Next.
Step5
Click on I'm calling the Internet and then
click on Next.
Step6
Enter the Phone number and click on Finish.
Step7
Click on More.
Step 8
Click Edit entry and modem properties.
Step 9
Click on Server tab.
Step 10
Ensure that TCP/IP is selected.
Step 11
Click on TCP/IP settings.
Step 12
Click on Specify name server addresses.
Step 13
Enter the DNS numbers as follows:
Prime Set of DNS Addresses for all PI users
Primary DNS: 198.83.19.241
Secondary DNS: 198.83.19.244
Alternet Set of DNS Addresses for PIv5 or above,
or DUN users only
Primary: 207.115.59.241
Secondary: 207.115.59.244
All PI DNS address the same "server".
The 207 set is preferred.
Step 14
Click on OK and then click on OK again.
Step 15
Click on Dial to connect. Be sure to check out the
notes
section.
Double click on My Computer and then double click on Control Panel. Double click the Internet icon. Click on the Connection tab. If you want, you can click on the Connect to the Internet as needed option box. If you do this, select the name of the DUN you just created from the dropdown combo box. Notice that there is a newly enabled check box labeled Disconnect if idle for and then there is a little box with scroll bars that allow you select a disconnect time. If you do NOT check this box then you will not be disconnected unless you choose to, or someone picks up the phone, an act of GOD, etc. However, you can select to be disconnected after 10 (or whatever) min. and when you finish downloading the latest version of Netscape your modem will automatically disconnect after 10 min.. of no modem activity.
If you connect via DUN, you won't get the Prodigy Internet surfbar.
If you connect via DUN, you must manually launch any and all Internet applications. Your browser will not automatically load once you are connected.
If you connect via DUN, you decide which applications will be installed and how, you decide when or if you will be disconnected after XX min. of no modem activity.
If you connect via DUN, enter the DUN User ID: as
username@prodigy.net instead of just username
in order to insure results into the future.
Hope this helps someone.
