It was the middle of the night in the early 1960's when a scream came from the bedroom adjoining mine. As I regained full consciousness at hearing my younger sister's expression of freight, I was delighted at the realization that she was experiencing the same horror that had thrilled me when I first read Shirley Jackson's now classic The Haunting of Hill House the week before. I can think of no other story to generate such outward reactions to the reading of it. The movie, titled The Haunting, is no less scary. After viewing a video copy of The Haunting last week, I was not surprised to find it as engrossing and frightening as the original viewing some thirty years before.Notable achievements... click the dot to learn more. Robert Wise, one of the very best film makers of all time, once again directed a best of genre movie in The Haunting.
Shirley Jackson's original novel, The Haunting of Hill House, is a wonderful literary work.
Julie Harris' portrayal of Eleanor Lance is haunting.
I can find no fault with this "modern classic" -- "gothic horror" ghost story. Both the novel and movie tell the story in a manner that is initially effective and always compelling.
