A comprehensive series that includes an introductory volume, British Canals (1969: rev. ed. 1984) and a number of volumes covering detailed studies of specific waterways.


PAGET-TOMLINSON, E. W.:- The Complete Book of Canal and River Navigations. (1993)

A compendious wide-ranging reference work covering most aspects of Britain's waterways.


DE MARÉ, Eric:- The Canals of England. (1950: reprint 1988)

Includes many interesting photographs.


ROLT, L.T.C .:- Navigable Waterways. 1969: rev. ed. 1985

A good introduction into the subject.


WILLAN, T.S.:- River Navigations in England 1600-1750. (1936)

An excellent history book on early waterways.


RUSSELL, R.:- Lost Canals of England and Wales. (1982)

A good guide to abandoned waterways.


CROWE, Nigel:- Canals. (1994)

English Heritage Series that provides the general reader with a good introduction to Britain's Canals.


DE SALIS, Henry Rodolph:- Bradshaw's Canals and Navigable Rivers of England and Wales. (1904 fac. ed. 1969)

An technical publication compiled at the turn of the century.
