Cruising the Waterways

Some 2,000 miles of inland waterways thread their way across Britain, linking major towns and cities, with some of the loveliest countryside. Please join us as we recap our seven month journey from Brighouse in Yorkshire to Weedon on Northamptonshire.

Note: Let's make a disclaimer....... Cruising the waterways for seven months was a very rewarding and enjoyable experience but we certainly did not come away as experts in "canalology"; in fact, we consider ourselves neophytes on the subject. See the bibliography section for some of the experts.

The Journey:

This is primarily a personal story of our travels along the " cut" and tells of our own experiences and impressions.
If we had a particular good or bad encounter we have passed it along, but bear in mind it may have been the result of a unique set of circumstances, also remember, it happened in 1993 and things and places change.
Where appropriate, we have included a few snippets about some of our family and friends who joined us; hopefully we will not be sued for libel.
To make the reading more informative we've mentioned a few places we heard about but did not visit, and have also included a brief historical background.

As mentioned earlier, we have combined our cruisings by the following areas:-

We left Reno, Nevada on 12th. March 1993, completed the purchase of CLAIRE JUSTINE on 7th. April and two days later commenced our 1,305 mile journey through 1.036 locks on 29 different canals and rivers. We lived on the boat for 189 days and had guests with us on 124 of them; 54 people joined us and 35 of them spent at least one night aboard.

On 28th. October we sold our boat and returned to, what seemed, a very large house on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada mountains........ The Conclusion.
