Note: George was born at either 3 Main Street or in Duke Street, Holme,
Westmorland. I believe the family moved to Yew Tree Cottage and then,
sometime before his father's death in 1904, they moved to Springfield
House (one of the oldest houses in the village). After his dad died the
family moved into Broadstone House. In the 1901 census George was
listed as a rural postman. He most likely learnt the tailoring business
from his father. I believe at one time he owned, or was involved with,
a tailor shop in Morecambe with his brother Matthew. At the time of his
marriage in1905 he was living at Oakland Cottage, Holme and his
occupation was a"Tailor". He and Sarah raised the family at 1- 2 Primrose
Bank, Holme where he worked as a tailor. In the 20's or 30's, when
work was scarce, he worked at Holme Mill and became quite ill. In the
40's and 50's he was employed by Mashiter's of Milnthorpe and
Hutchinson's of Crooklands as a bespoke tailor. He had a small chicken
farm down Holme Mill Road. During the war their grandson, John (yours
truly), lived with them and he has many fond memories. These include
walks over to Hale with Jessie, the dog, and lawn bowling and playing
darts with granddad.
When Sarah became seriously ill they moved to Kendal, living with their
son Ted and Daughter-in-Law, Gladys. The last few years of his life were
spent at Willesden, London with his daughter, Elsie.

Note: The 1861 Census list Elizabeth as a daughter (age 1) of John & Ann -
however the 1871 Census list her as an 11 year-old domestic servant and a
neice. This raises the question about Elizabeth's parents.
