Note: Matthew was born at Chapel Lane, Yealand Conyers - his surname on the
birth certificate is Brinnan. A copy of his birth certificate is in the
archives. In 1871, at age 14, he was working as an apprentice tailor
for Joseph & Richard Taylor in Duke Street, Holme. In 1881 he was living
with his family at 3 Main Street, Holme and his occupation was a tailor.
The family grew up at Yew Tree House, Holme but the probate records list
his address at time of death as Springfield Cottage, Holme. Matthew was
the secretary of the Free Gardeners Sick Club. He died in an accident.
He and his son Matthew were working on an acetylene gas machine in their
workshop and because it was dark they used a lighted candle. The naked
flame caused a large explosion, killing Matthew instantainiously and
injuring young Matthew. A long article on the inquest was published in
the Westmorland Gazette; a copy is in the archives. On son George's
marriage certificate in 1905 his father's occupation was listed as
"Coachman" however, he was deceased at this time This may have been a
temporary job that Matthew had before his death, maybe the tailoring
business was not doing well. A photograph of Matthew and Margaret with
their 11 children is in the archives. This photo was taken outside
Springfield House - one of the oldest houses in the village.

Note: Molly was born at Yew Tree Cottage, Holme and was raised at
Springfield House. After her father died in 1904 the family moved to
Broadstone House. I believe that Molly and her sister Norah ran a
haberdashery shop from this location during their early years. Around the
mid 1910s she was trained as a nurse at Middlesex Hospital and eventually
became Sister-in-Charge. In the early 1930's she moved to Preston and
opened her own Maternity Home.
On reaching her 100th birthday on 18th August 1985 she received a
letter of congratulations from Queen Elizabeth. A newspaper article
reporting this occasion in in the archives.
In their later years both Molly and Norah lived at 3 Orchard Creasant,
Arnside.

Note: Harry was raised in Holme, Westmorland. He emigrated to Australia in
1913 and was required to spend time doing government work to pay for his
passage. ("findmypat.com" shows that he sailed from London to Melbourne
in 1914). He didn't complete this obligation, instead he joined the army
in WW1. He was injured and on his return was caught for skipping out on
his emigration responsibilities.
He had various occupations including owning a newsagents in
Brisbane. In 1948 he owned his own building business.
Harry, Frances and son James visited England in 1938 (see
"findmypast.com" passenger lists)
During a visit to England in 1961 his wife Frances was taken ill and
died at The Royal Lancaster Infirmary. A newspaper article on her death
is in the archives.
