Note: Thomas & Sarah were living at Casterton when they got married but
had moved to Tearnside by the time their first daughter, Mary, was born
on 30 May 1784. They moved into the farmhouse of Cat-Holes (named because
of the nearby badger holes) between 1786 and 1789. This house is standing
today and photos of it are also in the archives. The Walker family were
living at Catholes in 1803 and Elizabeth was born in Kirkby Lonsdale in
1808. Sarah would have been about 47 at the time of her birth.
There are no entries in the Kirkby Lonsdale records for Brinnands
prior to 1783 so it is assumed that Thomas moved into the area sometime
before his marriage in 1783. There is an marriage entry for a Bridget
Brinand of Tearnside in 1785 and it is possible that she was Thomas'
sister.
There is another Thomas, married to a Margaret, living at nearby Far
Underlay; they had children during the same time period as Thomas &
Sarah. The relationship of the two Thomas' is unknown. It is unlikely
that Thomas & Margaret are the parents of Thomas; if Margaret had him at,
say, age 17 she would have been over 50 when she had Isabella.
A Thomas Brennand of Casterton died in 1824 at age 63; this could be
either one of the Thomas'. No burial information has been found for a
second Thomas or Sarah or Margaret.
