THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO REMEMBER WHEN BUYING A TRUE BLUE SHAR PEI IS it must have TWO PARENTS that are either blue or BLUE parents or BLUE in the immeadiate pedigree of BOTH parents. WE HAVE Seen people selling Platinums that are NOT double blue bred....you cannot get one of the BLUE colors talked about here INCLUDING LILAC without TWO BLUE bred Parents and in the case of lilac you have to see lilac or CHOCOLATE in the immeadiate pedigree as well. I see many Fawn pups sold as Lilacs...please...buyer beware! BE sure if you a contracting to purchase something specific you get in writting that it will be the color and size you believe you have bought. A reputable breeder will agree to put in writting and guarantee for you what you are buying.
Here is our new boy....he is white with a chocolate Frost and chocolate pigment. He was born snow white with pink leathers from two blue parents. XP was originally sold to us as a Lilac by Blue Berry Shar Pei...then they decided he must be an Isabella dilute..We belive he could be the expression of the CREAM NON DILUTE gene with blue overlay since he was born white with the tell tail biscut ears. Those ears however were shaded with blue and not cream! Like a pointed siamese cat! Then faded. We are calling him a PLATINUM BLUE.We are cuarrantly seeing other expressions of this color overlay combination other than a litter mate. Please email us if you believe you have this very beautiful gene expression.
In Shar Pei only the blue gene and Sable gene overlay other colors. Since the blue gene affects....or overlays existing colors it is not a true color gene in the sense that our other colors are. Like Sable must go OVER another color. SO does the Blue diloution of fading gene. IN Sharp Pei any dog with a self colored nose....nose matches the FUR..except for BLACK on BLACK is a dilute dog. The Shar Pei has several distinct dilute genes. THESE are not related to their SOLID or NON-DILUTE expressions. NOR are they related to eachother...each is a distinct seperate gene base. Many Shar pei have multiple gene base color codes. Just as many have only two or three. YOU only know the color code is there for sure (if the dog is not that color) IF one of the Parents is the color you do not see on the pup.
A cream non-dilute dog is no more likly to carry cream dilute than a black dog. A cream non-dilute dog is often miss marked with a dudly (brick)nose....but the black around the nose or muzzle..or BLACK TONGUE.. is a direct key to deciding its color as well. A TRUE DILUTE cream has a PINK nose like a white mouse. AND no Black pigment around the eyes or nose or anus. The pink is considered the white expression for the coat. Hence a self colored nose. Just as chocolate has chocolate and Apricot has a brick nose. The five Point red is a close cousin of the Apricot and often hard to tell the two apart. Most often the true Apricot will have what appear to be green shaded or yellow eyes and the FIVE POINT RED an intense orange coat with dark eyes.

Here is Platinum Express (Fat Boys) first BLUE litter. These puppies are what is known as platinum or CREAM ISSABELLA NON-DILUTE. Currantly AKC has no correct color box for this color variation. Platinums are born looking like a frosted cream with blue biscut ears. The pups become chocolate frosted with seemingly blue ears and blue eye liner pigment but this fades to chocolate as well. WOW we say....what a stunning litter! Express's mommy and daddy are BOTH blue. So is the damn of this litter. In order to get Platinum both parents have to carry the blue allel AND cream. This is similar to how the Lilac is produced. The lilac is actually a chocolate Issabella but when they first developed breeders did not understand that the blue allele is not a color but a color mutating gene. The blue dog is actually a BLACK ISSABELLA so if you hear Platinum is not an accurate color designation...you can add neither is Lilac or Blue! :)
THE GENE that causes BLUE in Shar
Pei is a DILUTION or OVERLAY gene. IT affects other
colors. LIKE black goes to BLUE and CHOCOLATE goes
to LILAC. RED FAWN to what is currantly misslabled Isabella dilute. This gene CANNOT STAND ALONE but mutates the base color it overlays. Therefore it is not a true color. It acts much the same as Sable does. IT is both true to
say that blue is not a true dilute gene and TRUE to
say it is A DILUTION OF BLACK. When registering this
color the correct AKC designation is NOT BLUE DILUTE. Because it is NOT A dilute dog. Only a dillution of the the COLOR on the dog... unlike OTHER DILUTES in the Shar Pei breed the BLUE dog is black pigment based and therefor not a true dilute dog.
The color expression is a DILUTION affect to the coat. LILAC DILUTE
is the chocolate version and MISSNOMER Isabella is the RED FAWN expression of this overlay gene. Currantly the only color designation for the 14 other expressions of this gene allel is INCORRECTLY ISSABELLA DILUTE...for this reason some blue breeders are choosing to register the base color of their dogs rather than incorrectly bucket both dilute and non dilute...red based and cream based dogs all together under one very inaccurate term.
Issabella DILUTE would correctly be this gene over a dilute dog...BUT not when it expresses over a nondilute dog. Such as apricot or five point red dilutes....or cream dilutes.
AKC has no demarkation at this time for the
individual color phases over these other
dilute colors. IF the TERM ISSABELLA were CORRECTLY placed in the MARKINGS BOX blue breeders could correctly register the fourteen plus epxressions of this overlay gene. WHAT A WORLD OF COLOR in the Shar Pei!

Our New Lilac horse coat girl.... NOTE how pale this chocolate is compared to chocolates without the blue overlay gene. She will lighten as she grows older to the silvery chocolate that is seen in Wiemerunners. Lilacs have CLEAR coats and should not exibit ear shading or stripes down the backs. Young dogs have BLUE EYES and the noses while self colored can be mauve when the dog is more silver in color. The lilac is the hardest to decern on computer screen...often looking milk chocolate. BUT if the dog looks very like a fawn or cream....it is not a lilac. Also Lilacs must have blue on BOTH sides of the pedigree just as all expressions of blue.

This Isabella DILUTE belongs to Kathie at CHINASKY Shar Pei in Arizona. Note her LIGHT colored leathers and overall pale shading. Even those pink looking foot pads. What a cutie. The designation "Isabella Dilute" currantly encompases all of the ISSABELLA expressed colors with blue overlay other than Chocolate(lilac) and blacks (blue). Which is totally incorrect since NOT ALL ISSABELLAS are true dilutes such as this cutie IS. AKC has not cuaght up with the idea they are all seperate color bases and Issabella can express on BOTH dilute and non-dilute dogs... with the blue overlay gene. The color transmutation has NOTHING TO DO WITH a dog being dilute. That has to do with pigment that is not black based (turning blue when the allele is present).

Here is a BLUE AND WHITE FLOWER puppy. Bred with love by Cheryl at PORKYPINES Shar Pei in Kansas. The blue gene acting in tandem with the flower gene which causes white body markings that take up about 60% or more of the dogs coat. The Flower gene is part of the Shar Pei color base and unique in many of its characteristics. Unlike BLue in all its other color expressions IT is not a showable trait at this time. Still many fanciers enjoy this variation of the wide variety of Shar Pei patterns, colors and shadings. We hope you enjoyed this brief explaination of complex genetics and feel free to call us with questions ....WE LOVE TALKING ABOUT PEIS!!!

Here is a classic ISABELLA NON DILUTE when blue overlays the red fawn gene. NOTE the DARK nose leathers here as well. This doll belongs to Porkypines Shar Pei as well. Most notable about the Izzy is a CINNIMON color caused by the blue overlay gene. THis is not easy to tell in a photo. It also affects the leathers as it does on the black when you see the expression of the blue color. TO get a BLUE DOG in any phase YOU MUST have the color present on both sides of the pedigree. WHILE the gene can travel underground it is best when aquiring breeding stock to get a pup DIRECTLY out of a blue parent to be sure you have the color gene IF the dog you are buying is not expressing the color (is not a blue or one of the phase colors). THE Isabella non dilute also comes in a MASKED version. This dog is more difficult to see the tell tale blue sadings in web pictues.
