The Mostly Country Music Page

This seems to be the homepage in honor of underappreciated musicians :), which says something about my taste in music, but I'm not sure exactly what. It does mean that I find a lot of my favorite music in the $1.99 bins at WalMart, which can be good, or bad (if I bought it three months ago for full price).

My Favorite Artists

including Vince Gill , The Wild Jimbos , George Strait , Chris LeDoux, Lionel Cartwright, Darryl and Don Ellis , The Marcy Brothers , The Chieftains, and Jimmy Buffett. Click on a name to see my info on the artist and any links I've found so far.

General music information, with a country focus:

There is a Country music newsgroup on the 'Net, if your site is set up to read Usenet. This is a fun place, although there is a lot of 'discussion' about certain artists (Garth, Shania, etc). Some record companies are also on the internet, including MCA Nashville . A good source of info for tour dates is Pollstar where you can search by date, location, or artist, and have schedule updates emailed to you.

Generic information about many country artists can be found at this site and this site .

Now, on to my favorite artists:

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band

The Dirt Band info has been transferred to its own page The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band OnLine because it got a dose of Miracle-Gro and was getting out of hand.

More links will be added to these - I didn't have the links written down or printed out when the gremlin ate the file, so I'll be hunting URLs down for a while and finding the links again. Thank you for being patient, and if you happen to have written some of them down, Please, let me know.

Vince Gill

My favorite singer in the world. Vince has the best voice I've heard, although the new singer Bryan White sounds a lot like Vince from the little I've heard.

I have some pics of Vince that I've scanned on the Vince Pics page

The Vince Gill Fan Club Page is great! Lots of information and pictures, and a place to ask questions. VH1 had a site with 3 video clips, but it's apparently gone. :( Vince's record label, MCA Nashville, also has a Vince page on their site. I also had another link with information about Vince's charity basketball game to benefit Belmont University in Nashville, but I can't find the site and assume it's been removed or outdated. But if anyone finds it, let me know.

The Wild Jimbos

This is a band whose members are all named Jim/Jimmy or some variation - Jimmy Ibbotson, Jim Salestrom, and Jim Ratts. They've done two albums, and I imagine they'd be a *great* live act. Their first (only?) single was "Let's Talk Dirty in Hawaiian," a hilarious song.

Their first album was "The Wild Jimbos". Hard to find, I've never seen it at WalMart. My info on the 2nd album comes from Teresa Barley (Thanks Teresa!)

The first Wild Jimbos CD/cassette is "Wild Jimbos." Ten songs, but I don't remember them all. Some I do remember are: Howlin' At the Moon
Sarah in the Summer
Train in the Canyon
Let's Talk Dirty in Hawaiian
Tilt-a-World
My New Wife
Unconditional Love
Bolongo Bay (my favorite)
Where the Light Comes From
and You and Me Kid
This one was released by MCA in 1991, and produced by Sam Bush of New Grass Revival.

The second Wild Jimbos CD was released in 1993. It is on Resounding Records which is an independent label based in Colorado. The address of the label is: 3001 So. Federal Blvd.
P.O. Box 205, Loretto Station
Denver, Colorado 80236
phone: (303)-331-2412.

The CD contains 10 songs:
Rivers of Babylon
It's Morning
No Big Ting
We Can't Get Together
Killybegs (This was on "Another Country")
Julianne
Wildwood
Firelines (This was on Jimmy Ibbotson's 1977 album)
The Pepperoni Song
Warrior's Dream

George Strait

One of the few "hat acts" who has earned the right to wear a hat. George got a college degree in ranch management from Southwest Texas State University (NOT Texas A&M, which I had in my head for some bizarre reason) before he started the country music gig while in the Army. He's also done some acting, in a movie called "Pure Country" and has won almost every award given by the CMA and ACM. He's been recording for over ten years now, and shows no sign of slowing down.

Some George Strait sites: This page (new URL) is a very good page with links to other pages.

Chris LeDoux

The other "hat act" who has definitly qualified to wear the hat. That big belt buckle Chris wears is legit - he was the World Champion Bareback Rider in 1976, and won a National Collegiate Rodeo title before that. He grew up in Texas and Wyoming, and lives in Kaycee WY now, on his own ranch with his wife Peggy and their kids.

He's one of the few "mainstream" singers who does really Western music - his songs are mostly self-written, and are amazing. I've got his box set - 3 CDs - and it's absolutely unbelievable.

Lionel Cartwright

Lionel Cartwright did ok on the radio for a few years, but I haven't heard anything out of him lately. He did 3 albums for MCA in the late 80's: Lionel Cartwright, I Watched it All on My Radio, and Chasin' the Sun. I think there may have been a fourth album planned, as his last single that got any attention (Be My Angel) isn't on any of the three albums. Lionel's new website is LionelCartwright.com

New information from Karen Light is coming soon!!!

I recently received some more information from Karen Light, who is a member of the Lionel Cartwright Fan Club.

Karen says: "Just to fill you in on a little details: Lionel had problems with MCA because they wanted to change his style because it wasn't fitting the picture that they wanted. He didn't want to change because he was proud of his own style--it was different than any trendy sounds on the radio, but it was his sound. After a lot of dispute with MCA, the two separated. At this time, it was made clear that anything that Lionel had done with MCA had become the property of MCA (hence the reason "Be My Angel" never showed up on an album) and he lost all of his songs. At the same time as his problems with MCA, Lionel also wanted to spend more time with his wife, Cindy (who was in the "Leap of Faith" video) and newborn baby, so the time off worked out in the end. Lionel has been enjoying being a father and writing up a storm. He plans to get back into the studio real soon--I hope so."

So maybe we'll be hearing from Lionel in the future. I was privileged to see him in concert at the Missouri state fair (for free, no less - he was at the Budweiser beer tent, and I was underage, so I joined the crowd standing outside the fence and watched for free) and get his autograph and a t-shirt. He's very talented - sings, writes, and plays guitar, mandolin, and keyboards/piano.

I got some more info from Karen Light the other day - good news, of a sort. She said:
I received a letter from Lionel/fan club regarding the correspondence that I sent about my membership in the fan club and what he was up to these days. He wrote back saying that the fan club was "in standby mode until we reach the point of releasing a new record" and that at this time he was "exploring options as far as getting a new album recorded and getting it to the public." He also added that his fan club has experienced a changeover. The new address is:
Lionel Cartwright Fan Club
P.O. Box 50835
Nashville, TN 37205

Darryl and Don Ellis

Another one of the obscure country artists that I like to listen to. These guys are brothers, tall, cute, and very good singers. I think their first single was "Goodbye Highway." I can't find much information about them, but I have seen them perform. Unfortunately, I don't remember much of the concert - it was only three years ago, but it was the day I found out my horse died, so I went to the concert to distract myself. I do know it was a good concert, I just don't remember any details. They performed in a high school gymnasium about 45 minutes from my home, and had a decent turn out. I probably could have gotten autographs or said "hi" if I'd been in any sort of coherent mental state. Maybe they'll come back to Missouri some day.

The Marcy Brothers

Yet another obscure group. Three brothers: Kevin, Kris, and Kendall Marcy (anyone see a pattern here?). I've got two CDs by these guys. They do great harmony work (brothers always do). They also recorded "Achy Breaky Heart" before Billy Ray Cyrus did (as "Don't Tell My Heart"), and did a decent job with it, but I just don't like the song, it has nothing to do with who's singing.

The Chieftains

Now we're in the non-country stuff. I love the Chieftains. (I also want to go to Ireland some day but that's another story). The coolest music around. I love bagpipes. I've found two Chieftains pages.

A Chieftains page - This one has a discography and other info.

The Other Page also with lots of information. RCA Victor also has an Irish music page .

Jimmy Buffett

Great music to listen to in the winter, or when the local schizophrenic Missouri weather pulls a fast one and the temp drops 50 degrees F overnight (It did this last night - 70 yesterday, 20 today - March 25). I have links, but they were lost when the html file was eaten by the black hole, so I'll add them again when I find them.

The Parrot Island store has lots of Jimmy Buffett merchandise, including t-shirts and music, listed in their online catalog

That's all folks! Be patient, I'm reconstructing the page, and I didn't have a printout of the files. I do now, and all the html files are saved on a disk. Let this be a lesson to you - don't trust computers.
