Alvirne gets charge from battery

By CHRIS PANTAZIS, Telegraph Sports Correspondent

HUDSON – The Alvirne High School softball squad got a great pitching performance and a clutch hit from its catcher in a climactic, extra-inning win on Wednesday.

Katy Cotter whacked a one-out double in the bottom of the ninth, scoring teammate Mandy Foote and lifting Alvirne over Londonderry, 2-1.

It was Cotter’s third hit of the day, and the victory raised the Broncos’ season record to 2-1. Londonderry is now 1-2 on the young season.

Broncos’ Kim Berger – pitching for the first time this season after rebounding from an illness – struck out 10 and allowed just five hits in a terrific pitchers’ duel with Londonderry’s Kolleen McNeil.

McNeil whiffed 12 and allowed just four hits, in the hard-luck loss.

Cotter, who had tripled and doubled in her first two trips to the plate, won the game by drilling a MacNeil offering to the left-center field gap sending Foote sprinting around the bases.

“I expected her to throw me a changeup, but she didn’t give me one,” said Cotter. “She gave me the fastball, and I was like, ‘Thank you’. “

Londonderry coach Wayne MacDougall was left lamenting the fact that he had spoken to his pitcher about not letting Cotter see a high-quality pitch in that bottom half of the ninth.

“I told Kolleen just before we took the field for that inning not to let her (Cotter) beat us by giving her a pitch to hit. But I guess she gave her a pitch to hit,” said MacDougall.

The Lancers received two hits apiece from McNeil and Sara Madden in suffering the tough defeat.

Both contingents notched runs in the first inning.

In the top of the frame, Lancer Madden stroked a two-out double, got to third on a wild pitch, and then scored on another wild pitch.

But Alvirne bounced right back to make it 1-1 in the bottom of the inning when leadoff hitter Katlynn McGrath reached on an error, stole second, and came sprinting to the plate on Cotter’s triple.

But then the pitchers took the game over in a big way, only allowing one hit each through the next five innings.

Londonderry looked like it was intent on breaking the 1-1 tie in the top of the seventh when leadoff hitter Tracy Johnson reached on a bunt single. But the visitors couldn’t manage a run.

In the decisive bottom half of the ninth, Foote stroked a one-out single, and Cotter came to the plate and provided the heroics which decided the contest.

And she wasn’t the only one who was stunned to see McNeil go right after her in the big situation.

“I’m kind of surprised they didn’t try to jam her,” said Alvirne coach Vickie Ware. “She’s such a natural hitter and so relaxed up there, and she got the big hit for us today.”

As for her pitcher Berger, Ware said “This was Kim’s first game because she’s been sick, and she came out without a lot of practice and pitched a great game.”
