Beagles that will be tri color are only black and white when born.. The brown color gradually replaces some of the black and a bit of the white markings on the head. As the dogs get older they continue to increase the brown coloring on the body. Some retain a very black saddle and some continue to get more brown though out their life time. Those that will be shades of brown and white seem to be all white or can be brown and white at birth. Below are pictures depicting the tri color progression.

1 Month old, You can see much more brown and the blaze is smaller
8 weeks old. The white blaze above the level of the eyes is almost gone. The color difference is due to these pictures being polaroids. This puppy will probably retain a black saddle. She appears to be a dominate tri.
