Timothy Sullivant of Williamsburg Virginia, Circa 1700
T imothy Sullivant of Williamsburg, York
County, Virginia, was born before 1700. The location of his birth
is unknown at this time. Although there was also a Timothy
Sullivant who died in Northumberland County and was also born
before 1700 (from Northumberland Co. VA Apprenticeships,
1650-1750 compiled by W. Preston & Haynie), I do not
believe that they are the same person.
Timothy Sullivan is mentioned in an article titled Pioneer
Irish Families in Virginia, The Meades and Sullivans by
Michael J. O'Brien, printed in the Journal of American Irish
Historical Society, Volume XXV, New York 1926. The article
says that Timothy Sullivan lived at Williamsburg, York County,
where in 1718, he married Anne, the widow of Jean Marot. The last
fact I have on a Timothy Sullivants is a record of a Timothy
Sullivant master of the ship Ann for Virginia January 14,
1716/1717. This record was in the Library of Virginia Digitized
Records in a record called Exchequor King's Remembrancer Port
Books. Weymouth. Searcher. List of Port Books vol. II p. 337.
There is much more information on Timothy's wife Anne. In the The Booker Connection, it
is listed that the wife of Richard Booker was Rachel Marot,
daughter of Williamsburg tavern owner Jean Marot and Anne
Pasteur, in York Co., Virginia. The magazine, William and Mary
Quarterly mentions these same connections and confirms them.
According to Vicki Shaffer, Ann's parents were Jean Pasteur and
Martha Harris.
As Jean Marot (also Moreau) migrated to Virginia on board the
ship Mary and Ann (from the list Huguenot Refugees on
Board Ship Mary and Ann, August 12, 1700, Virginia, James City)
in 1700. As mentioned earlier, Jean Marot kept a tavern at
Williamsburg. He must have married Ann Pasteur some time after
1700. They had three daughters Edith, Anne and Rachel. Edith
married Samuel Cobbs, Anne married (1)James Inglis, son of the
first Grammar Master at William and Mary College, Mungo Inglis
(2)James Shields (3) Henry Wetherburn (owner of Wetherburn's
Tavern in Williamsburg )
and Rachel married Richard Booker. James Shields and Anne Marot's
daughter, Anne married Robert Armistead and their daughter Mary
Marot Armistead became the wife of Judge John Tyler, father of
President John Tyler.
Jean Marot made his will in August 31, 1717 which was proved in
York County December 16, 1717. His death appears to have been
brought about by the violence of another tavern owner named
Francis Sharpe, who was remanded to the public jail at
Williamsburg on November 18, 1717, for the murder of John Marot.
Francis Sharpe was apparently never convicted as he was issued a
license to keep ordinary a couple of year later. Anne Pasteur
Marot remarried to Timothy Sullivant in 1718. According to
O'Brien and articles in the William and Mary Quarterly,
Marot left a large estate and the estate came into Timothy
Sullivant's possession after his marriage to Anne. Anne Pasteur
Marot Sullivant died in Amelia County, Virginia about 1742. In
her will, listed in Will Book 1 of Amelia County dated March 10,
1738 and probated on November 8, 1742, she names her daughters
Edith, Ann and Rachel. She also names John Sullivant, the only
Sullivant mentioned in the will. She was very specific that John
should only have one shilling sterling and a gold ring and
nothing else.
There are John Sullivant deed records in 1740 in York County,
Virginia which may be deeds involving this John which still need
to be researched. Nothing else is known of this John Sullivant.
In 1743 in the Amelia County Court records (Court Order Book
1, Amelia County, Virginia, 1735-1746 abstracted and compiled
by Gibson Jefferson McConnaughey) a court order is issued on
December 16, 1743 to bind out Charles Sullivant, an orphan. In
the same court records on July 20, 1744, a court order is issued
to church wardens to bind out Charles Sullivant and Elizabeth
Sullivant, orphans. Because of the closeness in time to Anne
Pasteur Marot Sullivant's will, these could be more Sullivant
children that were not mentioned in the will.
The last potential Sullivan connection are the following records:

The above records imply that there could be some further
Sullivant connections to this line because of the closeness of
the Sullivant and Booker land.
I am still in the process of researching this line and any
suggestions or records that would help would be appreciated.
