On a cool spring evening, about seventeen summers ago, a male elf and human female gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. The very next night the child was kidnapped from her bed. The distraught parents had the town turned upside down looking for the missing child. The child was never found.
The child grew up in a town of unknown name for several summers working as a slave and enduring many hardships. She was always being pushed to exhaustion, surviving on very little food, and when her work was not completed, the beatings followed. One particular workday finished with a beating so brutal that a scar was left across her back.

While journeying to a far away town with her master, the girl was left alone in an alley behind an inn. She was playing with several alley cats while he was inside doing business. The animals seemed to have a natural fondness for her, and treated her as if she were a member of their pride. From another alley, a stranger watched the child and the animals play. The stranger was impressed with the way she interacted with the felines. Attempting to speak with the child, the stranger received no reply. When asked where her father was, and the child pointed to the inn.
The stranger disappeared into the inn for several minutes, re-appearing with a scrawny and shoddy dressed human man the child knew as her father. The stranger requested the child to be released to her care. The man refused, knowing the child was a good worker when properly motivated. Several minutes had passed as the two argued over possession of this female child.
Realizing that she was getting nowhere with this man, the stranger turned and started to walk away. Then, in a sudden movement she turned around and said in harsh tones "Give me the child." The man, with fear on his face, didn't respond - he just turned and ran down the alley.
This was the beginning of the young girl's new life. The stranger tried to speak to the child several times before realizing that, although the child could understand what she was saying, the child could not speak. In addition, the child had known name, which presented another stumbling block. To correct at least one problem, the stranger sat with the child and tried to come up with a name. After spending hours thinking of names, getting frowns raspberries, the pair finally found one: Jadiara. Jadiara Fairlore. The name sparked a smile from the child, and a welcome nod of approval.
The stranger then tackled the next obstacle: teaching Jadiara to speak. Jadiara took to speaking rather quickly. Jadiara was taught the languages of both of her apparent heritages, human and elven. After being able to express herself verbally, Jadiara requested the stranger's name. Smiling, the stranger replied Nethiera.
In due time, Nethiera felt ready to tell Jadiara about her past. Jadiara listened, crying softly as memories rushed into her head. Jadiara had many questions: where was she from, who were her parents, and others. These questions weighed heavy on Jadiara's mind for some time. Questions, she had told herself, she would answer.
Nethiera watched Jadiara grow into a fine, educated young woman. She had taught Jadiara from a young age to respect the natural forces of the world in which she lived. When Nethiera believed Jadiara ready, she brought Jadiara to a special place to begin a new form of training. Jadiara, confused by her mentor's actions, questioned Nethiera. Quietly, slowly, Nethiera simply answered "It is time for you to learn how to survive."
For the next several years Jadiara studied the world of nature. She learned to identify many different plants and animals, tracks left behind by animals, the properties - mystical and non - of plants, and other relevant knowledge. Jadiara also was taught the ways of nature's magic and how to defend herself. Jadiara had become quite the student, and Nethiera was very proud of the eager young woman.
During their time in the forest, Jadiara had become fond of a young ferret that Nethiera kept. She would play with the ferret, and talk to it every night before she went to sleep. Upon completing her training, Nethiera gave the ferret to Jadiara, saying "His name is Tiko, may he keep you company and bring you happiness on your journey." Puzzled, Jadiara asked "What journey?" Nethiera replied "The journey to find yourself. To get answers to the questions you have. I have taught you all you need to get started. But remember to be wary of the world around you. I have shown you that it can be a very powerful ally - remember, it can be just as deadly." As she finished her explanation, Nethiera began to cast a spell. Jadiara fell asleep, waking the following morning in her room, equipped for a long journey.
