Quay's story is
familiar one in the poverty stricken hamlet of Zadush. His parents working
as peasants on the lord's farm had far too many children to support and were
forced to given Quay away. Fortunately, for Quay they were able to sell him
in to bondage to the Monastery of Kilom, named for the famous warrior-priest
Erin Kilom said to have slain a dragon with his bare hands.
Zadush is located several days south of the great city-state of Waterdeep. It is in a region controlled by Marquis Absolon. The Marquis spends his time in Waterdeep, fighting for the recognition and defense of his demesne. Alas the Marquis' battles in the halls of Waterdeep require great wealth. For the Marquis must live and entertain in the style appropriate to one of his station. Zadush was at one time a prosperous hamlet. However, years of draught and the Marquis' levies and taxes have brought the hamlet to near ruin.
The Monastery of Kilom is located two hours to the east of Zadush in a hilly region. Although not controlled by the clergy of St. Cuthbert it does maintain close ties with said priesthood. For Erin Kilom was a priest of St. Cuthbert. The monastery is self-sufficient owning much of the farmland in the surrounding area, as well famous Vineyards of Kilom. The monastery does not only train monks. Equal numbers of priests of St. Cuthbert and Crusaders leave it's training halls as well. Infrequently, a Paladin is raised from the halls of Kilom.
The monastery does not train all in the arts. Much manpower is required to harvest and till the vast farmlands and vineyards of the monastery. Hence, only those who show aptitude are encouraged to pursue the rigorous mind and body training required by the martial or holy arts.
Quay entered the monastery in his seventh year of life. During his first two years, it was determined that Quay was best suited to spend the rest of his life work the farms and vineyards of the monastery. He was judged to lack the mental discipline necessary for an initiate. However, shortly before Quay turned nine the monastery lost a good number of acolytes in the desperate defense of Calodon Pass. Although successful, the defenders of the pass, lead by noble and courageous Marquis Absolon*, suffered heavy casualties at the hands of the marauding bands of gnolls and hobgoblins. Several months after the battle, many of the children at Kilom were re-evaluated, and Quay was found worthy of joining the ranks of the initiates.
Compared to living with his parents, life was good at the monastery. While the food was unimaginative and bland, this fact was lost on Quay. Moreover, if he did not get as much as he would like to eat, the meals were at least regular. The day to day labor was hard and monotonous, but no different from his home life before the monastery.
The arduous and menial farm labor prepared Quay for the demanding physical stress of his training. The training honed his body further and steeled his mind for rigors associated with the arts. The training continued until one day, he was asked to choose the final path of his training. Quay showed interest in the teachings of St. Cuthbert, but found the martial training of the body and mind more akin to his nature. Hence, on the Day of Destiny, Quay chose the path of the supreme warrior, the monk.
Toward the end of his seventeenth year Quay passed the final test and was awarded the rank of acolyte in the Order of Kilom. His training at the monastery complete he, like all other acolytes, was asked to leave the temple and return when he attained the rank of master.
To Quay's knowledge, his family is still alive. However, he feels estranged from his parents and siblings, and considers the monastery his extended family.
Quay's current goal is to further his mastery of the mind and body. Although, he is apprehensive about leaving the monastery that has been his home for the past ten years, he knows it must be done.
* Famous quotes of Marquis Absolon: "Off course I lead from the rear. Have you any idea what the death of such a noble and valiant person, like my self, would have on the morale of peasants!"

Quay is a Caucasian
male with closely cropped black hair and hazel eyes. He is 5'8'' tall and
weighs 150 pounds. Although, he is seventeen years old, Quay's eyes reflect
a man with much greater wisdom and understanding then his age would suggest.
Due to his rigorous training, Quay is quite strong and physically very fit.
However, his body is lean, and does not betray the physical strength and stamina
contained within.
Quay is normally attired in simple peasant garb and wearing a pair of sandals. He carries a staff and a well-worn backpack adorns his back. When adventuring in the wild, a sling and pouch of sling stones hang form his rope belt.
Quay has a deep understanding of himself and of the universe in general. However, in his day to day dealings he is naïve and out of his element. Most of his life has been spent interfacing with people of a similar mental make up, and he finds the petty squabbles and grasping needs of most people useless. Quay is less interested in the definition of good and evil then he is in attaining mastery of his own mind and body. Money is not an object to be desired, but a tool to Quay. Hence, he does not fall victim the grasping, clawing greed of many adventurers, but instead obtains and uses money where it would further his own training and learning.
Quay's goal is the mastery of his body and mind, everything else is secondary.
