Nineteen years ago on a night filled with flashing light, lashing rain and dark shadows a half-elf named Vesper was born. As fate would have it, however, she was never to know her parents. For on that night she was taken by Cham-Po, high priestess of the Fee-Line cat cult.
The day before
the night of Vespers birth, Cham-Po was stricken by a prophetic cat-nap. In
it she beheld the vision of a baby girl being groomed by a cat. This was not
just any cat though, this was the ALL CAT. In a voice halfway between a growl
and a purr it commanded her to fetch the babe. She could be identified by
the cat paw print on her forehead. The child would be born that night in the
village of Cheshire in the household of the Jinxs. This girl would be the
Key to bring about the RETURN.

Vesper is a voluptuous creature that stands five feet eight inches tall. Her eyes are flaming orbs of silver with green specks floating in their depths. Her lips are as red as blood and her hair, which falls to the floor, is the color of a fresh blanket of snow at twilight. In the middle of her forehead is a delicate paw print placed on porcelain colored skin. Rising out of her hair are two delicately pointed ears with hoops of silver through the tips. Encircling her neck are two chokers - one with a pretty stone, and the other has a silver bell surrounded by teeth.
Vesper is garbed
in a sarong that can be arranged in what ever style she wants. The sarong
is reversible - one side being white, the other violet. Her hooded cloak is
blue-gray and clasped with a cat pin. She wears a pouch and her weapons (a
whip and a sickle) strapped to a belt. Her wrists are wrapped with crimson
ribbon and she generally goes bare foot, woven bracelets surrounding her ankles.

Hours after her birth little Vesper lay in her sleeping mother's arms. Suddenly a light appeared. Out of it stepped Cham-Po with a baby (this child had been left in the forest to die, Cham-Po had rescued her.) Now she gently picked up Vesper and placed the other child in her mother's arms. Quickly she checked for the birthmark and then made tracks out the window without anyone the wiser.
Vesper spent the next eighteen years in the Fee-Line temple. There, surrounded by hundreds of sacred cats, Cham-Po, and all the sunny perches that a cat could nap on, Vesper learned the skills that she would need in life. One of the many things she was taught was the ancient art of Cat-Fu: how to walk the cat-walk, the deadly cat fight, how to be aloof, taunt and confuse, the science of grooming, nonchalance and the ability to sleep anywhere at any time and in any position. The more mundane subjects were also taught, such as: reading, writing, arithmetic, dancing, magic, self-defense, etc.
Part of her training involved reading the temple scrolls. From these, Vesper tried to piece together what was expected of her. Not much was known except a few facts. The Key would bring forth the Mirror and together they would go out into the world. The more cat like the Key became, the closer they would be to achieving their goal. Mirror would have the ability to become any kind of cat. She would also trigger the transformation of the Key. Once this happened their quest would begin.
Vesper looked forward and at the same time feared this happening. Having spent her whole life with just one human woman and cats for company, she wished to learn about other people. At the same time she feared the unknown transformation and duty. On the dawn of her eighteenth birthday Cham-Po came to wake her. Without uttering a word she pressed a cup to Vesper's lips and motioned for her to drink. A numbness slowly spread throughout her body. As it reached her fingers and toes she realized that she could no longer move. Cham-Po muttered a spell and beckoned for her to rise and follow. Against her will she did. As the sun oozed across the stones of the temple floor she was lead to the short altar where she was made to kneel. Hundreds of cat eyes gazed at her from around the room. In the silence the only sound to be heard was that of Vesper's own heart.
Gently Cham-Po took her hands and placed them palm up on the altar. Looking into Cham-Po's eyes, Vesper felt real fear for the first time. As the sun light reached toward them Vesper noticed that the priestess held a curved blade. Before she could register its intent the sickle slashed down cutting her to the bone across both wrists. Before her stunned and pained eyes she watched her own life's blood pool on the altar. Slowly it began to assume a shape, suddenly it sprang at her. Pain slammed into her eyes driving her into unconsciousness.
Hours later, Vesper awoke on the cold temple floor with a headache, throbbing wrists and a weight on her chest. Slowly she opened her eyes and took a moment to appreciate the fact that she was not indeed dead. As she inspected her wrists, Vesper noticed that the cuts had been healed and only scars remained. Moving her concentration to her chest she noticed a blood red feline sitting there inspecting her intently. Idly it walked forward till they were eye to eye. Soundlessly Mirror greeted her, telling her to get up.
At this point nothing surprised Vesper. Shakily she got to her feet. Looking around she noticed that the temple was deserted and that the sun was setting. A glint of metal caught her eye. Laying in a pool of red was the sickle. Quickly she picked it up and studied it. Carefully Vesper wiped it on her clothes. Turning she stood to face the altar. She then made a promise that if she should ever come across Cham-Po again she would cut her another mouth with this very sickle. No matter what her reasons for doing what she had done, she could never forgive her.
Vesper and Mirror left the temple and headed for her room. Once there she began to gather up the things they would need for the journey. As she packed, her reflection in a mirror caught her eye. No longer were the orbs that looked back at her green human eyes. They were now the silver-slitted eyes of a cat with only a few green specks to proclaim their past color. Here was now proof that her time at the temple had ended, that change and journey were now upon her.
After Vesper and Mirror had gathered supplies and liberated some coins from Cham-Po's room, they headed out. So far in their quest, Vesper has not been overly impressed with the outside world. Most people she has met seem either stupid or greedy or both.
Vesper's frustration and disgust came to a head one rainy day. She and Mirror came upon a cart which had stopped in the middle of the road. As they passed it she saw a man whipping a donkey which refused to move. Placing herself before the angry man she ordered him to cease. He refused. When Vesper tried to stop him again, he turned the whip on her. Having had enough, she grabbed it, pulling him off the cart. When he hit the ground, Mirror leapt on him and began to claw him. Vesper took her sickle and cut loose the donkey. She then turned and cast a fire burst spell at the cart full of hay. Taking the whip she gathered Mirror and walked away. The liberated donkey meandered after them.
Now a threesome Mirror, Vesper and Jack (the donkey) wandered the land looking for clues. When needed Vesper would make money by dancing. Mirror has been known to "borrow" things from others in a pinch. The group does not want for food. Jack and Mirror are the only two friends that she has in the world, she would do anything for them (and vise versa). Even if it means asking for live mice at a tavern or leaving Jack standing wherever he stops.
The "Mirror As Royalty" bit provides Vesper with hours of fun filled entertainment. Not only is it fun to make others pay homage to Mirror, but it keeps people far enough away so that they don't bother her. Acting super obnoxious also causes people to not only doubt her sanity but her intelligence, thereby making them underestimate her. Vesper may be moody, but she is not stupid.
