The Philippi Martial Arts Academy teaches a variety of Asian self defense arts. Some arts such as Kodokan Judo or Koyamakan Karate are of Japanese origin. Some arts such as Chilin Chuan-fa Kung-fu, or Taiji quan are of Chinese origin. Depending on the availabilty of instructors, Arnis of Filipino origin may be taught at the Academy. There is a Hakutsuru study group learning Okinawan White Crane in the Academy.

The Academy hosts seminars in various martial arts instructed by visiting guest teachers. Previous visiting instructors have included: Zhang Luping teaching Yang and Chen styles of taiji quan; Walter 'Hock' Hochheim teaching Arnis; and Luo Dexiu teaching Baqua zhang, John Hamilton teaching kenjutsu, and Ronald Lindsey teaching Matsumura Hakutsuru Karate Jutsu and Matsumura Seito Kobudo.

The Philippi Martial Arts Academy encourages participation in tournament among its various martial arts. However, competition is not required for promotion. The Academy's attitude is that tournaments provide an opportunity for the students to see how other individuals train in their arts and to be given the opportunity to see a variety of other martial arts.

You will always be welcome here in our Academy, as a spectator or a participant, as long as you demonstrate respect for yourself, respect for others, respect for your culture, respect for other cultures, respect for your martial art style, respect for other styles. Failure to do so will result in your being tossed out the door (respectfully, of course).

For martial art terms which you do not know, follow the links below. These dictionaries are updated as I find the time and as I come across new terms. Check back from time to time to see the additions and changes. The pages are dated as they are revised.

The Filipino dictionary is the least definitive, due to the fact that the country is made of about 7,100 islands, many of which have their own dialect with localized terminology. A univerisal set of martial art terms does not exist. This is a collection of terms from various local martial arts represented in the United States.
