Taiji quan


The Philippi Martial Arts Academy teaches a variety of Asian self defense arts. Taiji quan is a Chinese martial art. Its teaching depends upon the availabilty of instructors.

History of Taiji quan

The documented history of Taiji quan traces back to the Chen village in ? Province in China. Chen ? is given credit as the founder of the Chen family martial art. The current practioners are considered to be of the 19th, 20th, and 21st generations since the founding of the style. Chen ? is the current senior instructor in the Chen family style.

Yang Lu ? was a servant in the Chen village. He observed the martial arts practice by the Chen family members and practiced on his own. The family members discovered that he was learning the Chen family art and took him before the head of the Chen family. Chen ? decided that Yang should learn taiji quan. After learning the Chen's taiji quan, Yang moved to Beijing, the capitol of China, looking for work. He eventually gain employement as a servant in one of the imperial palaces as a martial arts instructor. In Beijing, he gained the nickname of Yang the Unbeatable.
