How Ohio Helped Invent the World

Nearly everyone knows that the airplane was invented in Ohio, that Buckeye born Thomas Edison thought up the light bulb, that a hat to prevent and cure baldness was created in that same great state... Never heard of the hat? It’s just one of many surprises that "How Ohio Helped Invent the World" has in store for its readers. Author Curt Dalton, Curator of Visual Resouces for the Montgomery County Historical Society, combed the patent records and discovered that Ohio was responsible for numerous inventions, both great and small, including the following:
• Chewing Gum • Barbed Wire • Hot Dogs • Revolving Toilet Seat • Modern Golf Ball • Ice Cream Cone • Gas Mask • Play-Doh • Automatic Traffic Light • Cash Register • Wristband Cigarette Lighter • Matchbook • Paper Milk Carton • Automobile Starter • Modern Beehive • Disposable Diapers • Junior High School • Teflon • Hamburger • Drinking Fountain • Life Savers Candy • Steam Fire Engine• Leaded Gasoline • Toe Holder for Sunbathers •Stethoscope • and many, many more!

“Looking back at the title of this book, How Ohio Helped
Invent the World, it may seem to some that there’s a bit of bragging going on. And why not? Being a born and bred Ohioian myself, I’m pretty proud of our Midwest state. But I don’t think that the title exaggerates in any way. Inventors from Ohio are responsible for a wide range of ideas that have changed the way we eat, live and think. The first Ohioians to receive a patent were Nathaniel Kirk and Sam C. Clark of St. Clairsville, Ohio on July 18, 1812. The machine was “for breaking, hairing and fleshing every species of hides.” The creative minds from the Buckeye state have been going full tilt ever since. In the last five years alone, Ohio has been granted over 24,000 patents. Not having the resources to put out a 100,000 page encyclopedia, I have had to limit myself to writing on subjects that can easily be identified or easily amuse. With such a vast amount of material to work with, the book almost wrote itself.
While the major inventions are listed in the Table of Contents, others have been inserted here and there as part of the trivia throughout the book. Many “firsts” of Ohio that I found during my time-travel through the state’s vast past have also been included. As Abraham Lincoln once stated, we cannot escape history. I am in hopes, however, that we can skip the boring parts. I have done my best to make
sure this book does so. Enjoy.” — Curt Dalton

Author of over twenty books, including: Through Flood, Through Fire; When Dayton Went to the Movies; Home Sweet Home Front; and The Terrible Resurrection.
