Stethoscope and Ear Trumpet - Excerpt from "How Ohio Helped Invent the World"
Rene Theophile Hyacinthe Laennec, of Paris, invented the first stethoscope in 1816. He chose the name from the Greek words for chest, stethos, and to inspect, skopeein.
Laennec used a hollow wooden tube to listen to the heart.

Dr. Nathan B. Marsh, of Cincinnati, Ohio was granted the first United States patent for a stethoscope in 1851. His invention contained the first recorded use of a diaphragm chest piece, and was the first commercially marketed stethoscope that used both ears.

Dr. Marsh’s invention was granted patent #8,591 on December 16, 1851.

Dr. Nathan B. Marsh's stethoscope would eventually have ear parts added because the tubes had a tendency to slip out of the doctor's ears unless he used both hands.
