DAY 4, KOOSHAREM TO TORREY - 43 MILES

After a nice breakfast at the only cafe in Koosharem we were ready to head up the mountain pass to Torrey. The weather was continuing to warm (though still cool in the early morning) and winds were still light. There's a little road that forms a shortcut between Highway 62 and Highway 24 to Torrey and that would save us about 10 miles. The climbing started right away with steep 8%-10% grades (not uncommon on this route) and increasingly nice views back into Grass Valley. The downhill side was quite nice with long sweeping turns that let you coast along at nearly 40 mph without having to apply the brakes.

Mountain Pass between Koosharem and Torrey
We passed the town of Loa and sailed into the little town of Lyman - same name as John. Could one of his ancestors have founded this town? We stopped for pictures, of course. And when we saw the little post office we stopped and had the post-master postmark a letter for John as a souvenir. Back on the road it wasn't long before we saw the red cliffs of Capitol Reef N.P. and were rolling into Torrey.

John's Ancestoral Home?
Being right at the entrance to Capitol Reef, Torrey is a lot bigger than the towns we'd been staying in with lots of motel rooms and options for dining. Our motel was on a high plateau with great views of the valleys on either side. Another nice and relatively easy day of cycling. Tomorrow we'd tackle the highest pass of the ride and our longest mileage. Next
