Day 4: Thermopolis Our luck with the weather finally ran out. Not a storm, but a steady drizzle all day long. But we'd planned on taking this day off anyway to explore Thermopolis. Hot Springs State Park is like a nice big city park surrounding the natural mineral pools. There's an indoor spa, open to the public, a swinging bridge across the river, and a local herd of buffalo on land adjacent to the Park which we weren't lucky enough to see that day. |
| Two hotels within the Park also have spas fed by the local waters. The original 100 year old hotel has been restored by Best Western. The other hotel, where we stayed, is a Holiday Inn, owned by a local man and avid hunter. His safaris, both locally and worldwide, have netted him dozens of taxidermied "trophies" which populate the walls of the hotel along with lots of hunting photographs. It made for a rather weird atmosphere... |

Despite the constant rain we had a nice day in Thermopolis. We explored the Park, toured the Dinosaur Museum, had another surprisingly good lunch of Italian-style sandwiches (in Wyoming?) and enjoyed a nice long soak in the hotel's outdoor spa with the gentle raining falling around us.
And we got to watch another NBA playoff game, this time while sitting beneath the stuffed heads of moose and rhinos in the Holiday Inn lounge. |
Thermopolis was a very nice stop. But we realized our luck with the weather might be running out. Next
