What's known about our COMPTON lineage was mainly derived from the census, history and land items on the USGenWeb Benton Co, IA website, the ROSENKRANS book (see the ROSECRANS page) and the POUND/KESTER book (again see the ROSECRANS page)

Jennie Rose COMPTON

Jennie Rose COMPTON married Chancy Thomas ROSECRANS on 30 Oct 1895. Family tradition suggests that she was once involved in some kind of accident with a horse and that this lead to her developing some mental problems. Eventually she was admitted to California's Stockton State Hospital in May 1916 and died there 30 July 1921.

Joseph R COMPTON

Joseph is listed in the 1860/1880 censuses (Benton & Warren Co, IA respectively) as born in OH, his occupation telegraphy. His parents are also listed as born in OH in 1880 but SC in 1860.

Elizabeth HILDENBRAND

According to the two books mentioned above, Elizabeth's last name was HILDERBRAND. But according to the 1880 census this might actually be HILDENBRAND because Joseph and Elizabeth also had in their home one Harrison HILDENBRAND. Harrison is about 13 years older than Elizabeth and could possibly be her older brother. Harrison is listed with a son Harry age 6. Also there are HILDENBRAND/HELDENBRAND families in Benton Co, IA near where the COMPTONs used to live.

Eugene COMPTON

Eugene was born some time after the 1885 Iowa State Census. In 1900 he is living in Clark Co, IA with his sister Maud who is married to Frank VINCENT. Nothing else is known for sure about Eugene however there is a Eugene COMPTON in the 1920 census for Colorado and interestingly his occupation as listed as telegraphy, just like suspected father Joseph.
