It appears that Edward did a little farming, taught school, and ran for political office in the mid-1890s. Wife Josephine may have died from complications related to giving birth to daughter Josie. A couple years later Edward remarried and gained a step-son Everett HART. 2nd Wife Margaret BRADY? HART may simlarly have died from complications related to giving birth to daughter Maggie. Edward moved his family to CA around 1904 and settled in the Fresno/Tulare Co area.

GG-Uncle William Jefferson DAWSON

Edward's brother, William Jefferson "Jeff" DAWSON was married to Martha DUCKWORTH in Benton Co, MO on 17Feb1884. She had to have her father's permission since she was under 18. After that we don't know much about them until they show up in the 1900 census in Fresno Co, CA where he is working on a ranch and investing in oil. Apparently wife Martha was rather sickly and they had a servant, Lola, to help her. When Martha died in 1905, Jeff ended up marrying Lola and became step-father to her daughter Evelyn. They must have had a good relationship for in later years Evelyn would list her maiden name as DAWSON. Evelyn married Everett RANK who was a nephew of Jeff's 1st wife (Everett's mother was also a DUCKWORTH, a younger sister of Martha's). Jeff DAWSON had only one surviving child, William Jefferson DAWSON Jr. His birthplace coincidentally is being restored as a historic site of Fresno Co.

GG-Gpa James J DAWSON

James' middle name may have been Julius. When son Edward was almost 4 years old, James enlisted in the Union Army and was a member of Company F of the Missouri 45th Infantry. Barely a month later he was dead, not from battle but illness which some accounts say was measles.

GGG-Gpa Henry A DAWSON

Henry A DAWSON's middle name may have been Abrams or Abraham. Henry A appears to have been a prominent citizen in Benton Co, MO as he is listed as a Justice of the Peace and the county history book states that early elections were held in Henry A's home. Henry A happened to die in a Federal census year when they also happened to fill out a Mortality Schedule. There it says that Henry A DAWSON was a doctor. Presently we have not yet found information that supports or disagrees with this occupation. However wealth is implied in that Henry A did own an unusual amount of land, a bit over 400 acres.

Thomas DAWSON -- possible father of Henry A DAWSON

Thomas DAWSON is a candidate for the father of Henry A for the following reasons....
  1. Thomas seems to be connected with a William DAWSON. In the 1850 Fulton Co, IL census the household of William (and wife Lucy) is listed immediately after that of Thomas (and wife Dianna). In 1860 both households are again listed next to each other but this time it's over 200 miles away in Cedar Co, MO (where their surname is mispelled as Danson).
  2. William is a suspected brother of Henry A (see the notes on William, Isaac and Jacob).
  3. A weaker reason, both Henry A and suspected brother Isaac have eldest son named Thomas.

Jacob DAWSON -- possible brother of Henry A DAWSON

Various Benton Co records show that Jacob DAWSON was among the earliest settlers in the county, about 1834, living along Turkey Creek. He is a strong candidate for a brother of Henry A for the following reasons....
  1. Jacob may have been one reason that drew Henry A to Benton Co (around 1839).
  2. Both men were born in OH. Henry A is listed in the 1850 Mortality schedule as age 41, born in OH. Jacob is in the 1850 census and is listed as age 42, also born in OH.
  3. They lived near each other. In the 1850 census Jacob's household is listed only a few dwellings away from the household of Henry A's widow.
  4. Jacob was apparently very sick and wrote a will shortly before he died. One of the two witnesses that signed the will was James J DAWSON, son of Henry A.

William DAWSON -- possible younger brother of Henry A DAWSON

William DAWSON was probably in Benton Co, MO by 1840. He might be the male 20-30 years old listed in Jacob DAWSON's household in the 1840 census. Records show that he was married in Benton Co, MO to Lucy SHARPE on 21 Mar 1841. He is a strong candidate for a brother of Henry A for the following reasons....
  1. Henry A officiated at the marriage of William and Lucy.
  2. Like Jacob and Henry A, William was also born in OH (look under Jacob for more info).
  3. In 1850 William and Lucy are in Fulton Co, IL where it is believed that Henry A lived prior to moving to Benton Co, MO.

Isaac N DAWSON -- possible younger brother of Henry A DAWSON

Isaac N DAWSON probably arrived in Benton Co about 1849-50 as he is listed in the 1850 census, yet the youngest child in the household, presumably his daughter, is age 2, born in IL. He is a strong candidate for a brother of Henry A for the following reasons....
  1. Jacob and/or Henry A may have been what drew Isaac N to Benton Co.
  2. Like Jacob, Henry A and William, Isaac was also born in OH (look under Jacob for more info).
  3. They lived near each other. In the 1850 census Isaac's household is "next door" to Jacob and thus only a few dwellings away from the household of Henry A's widow.
  4. In 1860 Isaac is in Trinity Co, TX. Included in his household is a 15 year old Jane. Jane may be Isaac's daughter, perhaps Jane after her mother's middle name. But this is not certain since the 1860 census data on her is not a perfect match with the 1850 census. It may be a stretch, but an alternate explanation is that Jane might actually be Paulina Jane (daughter of Henry A and Mary A Dawson) who is temporarily staying with "Uncle Isaac" since her mother just died and left her an orphan.

Thomas DAWSON -- son of Henry A DAWSON

Everything known about this Thomas DAWSON is included in the following entry for Polly NEWCOM.

Polly NEWCOM -- possible 1st wife of Henry A DAWSON

Polly NEWCOM (d IL bef1836?)....Records for Sangamon Co, IL show a Henry DAWSON married Polly NUCUM, 20 June 1825. Whether this is our Henry A DAWSON is not yet certain. If Henry A DAWSON was actually born c1808-9 he would only have been about 17 to marry Polly NUCUM. Such a young marrying age is unusual for a male, but not unheard of. It is unusual enough that it wouldn't be considered a strong possibility except for the following interesting "coincidences".....
  1. In 1840 Henry A DAWSON bought property in Benton Co, MO from William NEWCOM who lived in Lewis Co, MO over 160 miles away (in a straight line). A double transaction is recorded in the Benton Co deed book, that is, the purchase by Wm NEWCOM is listed first and then immediately following is the sale to Henry A. It's almost as if the two were friends or relatives that pre-arranged the sale and transfer. Could it be that Wm NEWCOM and Polly NUCUM are related (her last name mispelled in the marriage record)?
  2. From Henry A's probate in 1850 we learn that he had a son Thomas who was no longer living at home, and whose whereabouts were not known at that time by the surviving family. Thomas is probably the male age 10-15 listed in Henry A's household in the 1840 Benton Co, MO census. If this age is correct then Thomas was born between 1825 and 1830 which would fit with Henry DAWSON/Polly NUCUM.
  3. In 1853 Henry A's son Thomas was found living in Scotland Co, MO according to a property transaction where Henry A's widow Mary (Polly) pays $67 for Thomas' share of the inheritance (53+ acres). Why is he in Scotland Co? Interestingly a William NEWCOM of Lewis Co (see #1) owns property in Scotland Co. Could it be that this is the same Wm NEWCOM as in #1 and is Thomas' uncle or grandfather? Perhaps Thomas is running the Scotland Co farm for his relative...??

Sarah KEARNS -- possible 2nd wife of Henry A DAWSON

Sarah KEARNS (b ?? ????, d MO? bef1841)...Records for Fulton Co, IL show a Henry A DAWSON married Sarah KEARNS, 26 Nov 1835. Whether this is our Henry A DAWSON is not yet certain. However there are certain "coincidences" that make this a strong possibility....
  1. As far as we can tell, after son Thomas, there is a gap of over six years where Henry A has no new children. This suggests the death of his first wife, and a second wife as mother of the next two children, James J and Jacob. According to the 1850 census James J was born c1836 which fits well with a Henry A/Sarah marriage in 1835.
  2. During the 1840's Henry A reportedly had an employee named Benjamin KEARNS (sometimes spelled KEERAN or other variant). This Benjamin KEARNS also came from Fulton Co, IL. Henry A also officiated at the marriage of Benjamin KEARNS and Mahuldah DAWSON (relation uncertain) in 1846. Could this Benjamin KEARNS be a younger brother of Sarah KEARNS? (and could Mahuldah be the sister of Henry A's last wife Mary "Polly" ??)
  3. Sarah KEARNS' probable father is Benjamin KEARNS Sr. In the 1850 census for Fulton Co, IL all his children are listed as born in IL except for Elizabeth who is 10 years old and born in MO. Could it be that the older KEARNS were in MO around 1839-40 helping Henry A and Sarah move? or to help care for Sarah who was deathly sick? (It appears that Sarah died in 1840 as Henry A's household included a woman 20-30 in the 1840 census, yet Henry remarries in Jan 1841).

Jacob DAWSON -- son of Henry A DAWSON

Not much is known about Jacob yet. It appears he moved with his younger half-siblings to Texas around 1860. Jacob DAWSON, age 22, enlists in the TX Confederate Army in 1861 and also received pay in 1863 for his service. This is believed to be Jacob, son of Henry A, because nearly identical entries exist for H. F. DAWSON (Jacob's half-brother Henry F).

Mary "Polly" Ann DAWSON -- last wife of Henry A DAWSON

Records for Benton Co, MO show Henry A DAWSON married Polly DAWSON, 20 Jan 1841. This marriage is not in dispute, however it was questioned whether Polly's maiden name were truly Dawson or if the marriage record used her married name for some reason. Strong evidence suggests it actually was DAWSON, a DAWSON marrying a DAWSON, because Polly appears to be related to one Jonas DAWSON of TX based on the following....
  1. Polly moved her family to TX around 1859/60 and died shortly thereafter. She has probate records in both MO and TX. The MO records simply state that her five children were living in Texas. According to the 1860 census Collin Co, TX, it looks like the two youngest are in the household of one Jonas DAWSON.
  2. Jonas DAWSON of TX was administrator of her TX estate (her stepson James J was administrator in MO)
  3. This Jonas DAWSON of TX was listed as age 45, born in NC. Interestingly Polly was also born in NC and about 5 years younger than Jonas. Since the DAWSON lineage of Henry A came from OH and IL, then Jonas is more likely related to Polly and is probably her brother.
  4. Polly's daughter Paulina Jane DAWSON marries Burrell JONES who just happens to be stepson of Jonas DAWSON (Jonas had remarried in 1860 to Charity JONES)

Henry Franklin DAWSON -- son of Henry A & Polly DAWSON

He was living in TX according to his mother's probate in 1860 although he has not yet been located in the census. He served in the Confederate Army (see entry for older half-brother Jacob). In 1870 he was living in Denton Co, TX with sister Paulina Jane DAWSON JONES (refer to her record) and eventually settled in Weatherford, Parker Co, TX.

George W DAWSON -- son of Henry A & Polly DAWSON

George was living in TX at the time of his mother's probate in 1860. Nothing else is yet known about him.

Paulina J DAWSON -- daughter of Henry A & Polly DAWSON

Paulina Jane was living in TX at the time of her mother's probate in 1860. She might be the "Jane" listed in the household of (possible uncle on father's side) Isaac N DAWSON in Trinity Co, TX 1860 census (see entry for Isaac). Records for Grayson Co, TX show that Paulina J DAWSON married B D JONES on 5 Jan 1865. Burrell D JONES was the stepson of Jonas DAWSON who is probably Paulina's uncle on her mother's side (Jonas had remarried in 1860 to Charity SNUFFER JONES).

Mary Elizabeth DAWSON -- daughter of Henry A & Polly DAWSON

According to mother Polly's probate in 1860, Mary is living in TX, probably in Collin Co with suspected uncle Jonas DAWSON (and sister Sarah). Records of Collin Co, TX list the following marriages. It is not yet known if these apply to Mary E daughter of Henry A and Polly DAWSON.

Mary E DAWSON and George HAWKINS on 20 Dec 1871
Mary E HAWKINS and J.G.OSBORNE on 27 Sep 1884

Sarah Ann DAWSON -- daughter of Henry A & Polly DAWSON

Polly must have been pregnant with Sarah when husband Henry A died. According to mother Polly's probate in 1860, Sarah is living in TX, probably in Collin Co with suspected uncle Jonas DAWSON (and sister Mary). Records of Collin Co, TX list a marriage of Sarah Ann DAWSON and W.T. MARTIN on 17 Jul 1875 however this appears to be Sarah Ann, daughter of George G. DAWSON and not Henry A.
