In 1870 the census for Benton Co lists William A REEDER and his new wife Sarah Louisa SAPP DAWSON (see photo), baby John and step-sons Edward and William J DAWSON in the household of Elijah REEDER {b MD c1791}. It is not known whether Elijah is William's father or grandfather. As well as being step-father to the two DAWSON boys, William REEDER was also guardian of William J McMURTRY for a while after the death of Samuel SAPP, the boy's grandfather. William REEDER died in 1898 and his obituary stated that he was "a consistent Christian." The Civil War pension file of James J DAWSON indicates that Sarah lived with daughter Martha REEDER RENEAU until her death in 1922.

Samuel SAPP arrived in Benton Co, MO about 1839-40, in time to be listed in the 1840 census. It is believed that previously he was in Boone Co, MO for the following reasons....
- The surname SAPP appears numerous times in Boone Co in 1840 and earlier censuses.
- Oldest son Abraham reportedly was born and died in Boone Co, although he lived most of his life in Benton Co.
- A weaker reason, son John married Nancy Colvin of Boone Co.
Presently what little bit of information is known about Clarinda LEAR comes from the book on the McMURTRY family. According to family tradition Clarinda's mother's name was Ann.

In our DAWSON family notes William J McMURTRY is referred to as "Willie". He was first cousin of Edward E DAWSON after whom he named his 3rd son. Louisa Frances WILLIAMS was the grand-daughter of Benjamin H WILLIAMS who was also the administrator for the estates of James J DAWSON in 1865 and Henry A DAWSON in 1850. The WILLIAMS and McMURTRY families left Benton Co, MO and settled in Denton Co, TX about 1878. Today many McMURTRY descendants still live in the northern parts of TX, from Dallas to Lubbock, including author Larry McMURTRY (be sure and visit the FAMOUS COUSINS page).
Martha married Harrison Reneau ca late 1897.
