and Isabelle (Wright) Harbert.
| Thomas Harbert was born on July 4, 1734 in Monmouth, New Jersey. Isabelle Wright was born in 1738 in Burlington, New Jersey. Isabelle and Thomas were married on August 6, 1758 in Shrewbury, New Jersey. About 1765, Thomas Harbert and his wife, Isabelle, and two sons, Samuel and Edward, left New Jersey and moved to Winchester, Virginia. In 1771, the Harberts moved across the Alleghenies and into Monongalia County. They lived on Deckers Creek. In 1775, the Harberts left Deckers Creek and moved up the West Fork of the Monongahela to a place called Jones Run. Isabelle gave birth to three more Harbert children in western Virginia. The third son was named after his father, Thomas Jr.. William, John, and Celia made a family of six. Father Thomas served as a captain in the militia and | served under Major Benjamin Robinson. In the winter of 1778, several families took refuge in Fort Harbert on Jones Run Creek in [West] Virginia. They were concerned about hostile Indians seeking revenge for the death of their mighty Shawnee chieftain Keigh-tugh-qua, or the Cornstalk. On March 3rd, Indians attacked the barn-like structure of Fort Harbert. Thomas was killed while grappling with an Indian warrior who had forced himself into the Fort. In addition to Thomas being killed during the attack, four other adults were wounded; and seven or eight children in the yard were killed or taken prisoners. One Indian was killed, and two badly wounded. Survivors included Samuel Harbert at about 18 years old, Edward was sixteen, Thomas Jr. was ten, John was nine, and William was about six. |

Harbert for this family is of English origin. Thomas Harbert's grandfather was also named Thomas. The elder Thomas had patents for land in Middletown, New Jersey, as early as June 1677 when he bought a tract of 120 acres on Horse Neck at age 30. His name was spelled "Harbor," "Harbur," "Harbert," and "Herbert." Middletown was spelled "Midleton," "Midletowne," and "Midltown." Near-illiteracy was the rule in most of New Jersey -- and in most of the colonies. These were times of a simple agricultural economy. During these years, the spelling of surnames was not standardized. Many people did not know how to write. When names were recorded, they often were spelled phonetically. The English pronunciation of the first "e" of Herbert is spoken as an "a." Therefore, Herberts and Harberts were often interchanged both in England and America. Sometimes the same individual would be listed in various documents with either name. With Thomas (born 1734), the surname Harbert becomes the conventional spelling that will last for all generations to follow. |
